Dr. M. Anthony Pogrel is a Professor and Associate Dean in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry, where he also previously served as Department Chair. A member of the full-time faculty at UCSF since 1983, Dr. Pogrel received his dental degree from Liverpool University in England and his medical degree from Aberdeen University in Scotland. He completed advanced training in general surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery across Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Miami, Florida. Prior to joining UCSF, he was appointed Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Peterborough and Cambridge, England. He holds active medical and dental licenses in California and is board-certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
An internationally recognized surgical leader, Dr. Pogrel is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. A prolific scholar and frequent invited lecturer at national and international specialty meetings, he has authored more than 200 scientific publications in the peer-reviewed literature covering a wide spectrum of maxillofacial surgery, surgical pathology, and nerve injury management.
