Marna Rayl Greenberg, DO, MPH is the immediate past Vice-Chair of the Department of Emergency and Hospital Medicine, Research at Lehigh Valley Health network and Professor, USF Morsani College of Medicine. She is actively involved in the curriculum development and advising for USF SELECT students and chair of the DME academic appointment and promotion committee for their faculty.
Dr. Greenberg completed her medical school training at the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Tulsa, OK), followed by a three-year residency in Emergency Medicine at Delaware Valley Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. She has maintained her continuous board certification in Emergency Medicine (EM) and Family Medicine since 1991 and 1995 respectively. After joining LVHN, she completed her Master of Public Health Degree at Johns Hopkins, Bloomberg School of Public Health (Baltimore, MD) and was certified in medical management by the certifying commission in medical management in 2011.
Dr. Greenberg has had extensive research and publication experience related to resolving gender differences in education and care provided in the Emergency Department. She has received over $600,000 as a principle or sub-investigator on research projects designed to improve patient care and she has over 100 personal peer reviewed publications.* Her manuscripts have been published in reputable journals such as Annals of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, JACEP Open, the Journal of Emergency Medicine, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine, Clinical Therapeutics, among others. She serves as a journal editor for JACEP Open, and a peer reviewer for many journals having been awarded the WestJEM 'High Quality Peer-Reviewer' award and a “Top Reviewer” award by JACEP Open. Dr. Greenberg was a core faculty of the EM residency program from 2002-2021. She successfully mentored medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty in hundreds of abstracts, capstones, and manuscripts in her 15-year tenure as the Director of Emergency Medicine Research (2007-2017) and subsequent position as the Vice-Chair of Emergency and Hospital Medicine Research (2017-23). In parallel, she began teaching in the USF SELECT program in 2013. She developed the MS4 curriculum for the health systems domain and was a domain leader from 2014-19 followed by advancing to the SELECT IV course director (2019-current) and a SELECT Collegia Faculty Advisor (2021-current).
She has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors such as receiving the SELECT advisor award (2021, 2023), the outstanding SELECT Faculty award (2022), the Keystone Faculty Teaching Award (2022), the Leonard Tao Humanism Award from the Barness Behnke Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (2021), receiving nomination and induction into the Robert A. Good Honor Society (2020) , the LVHN Medical Staff Research Award (2019), receiving the USF Theodore/Venette Ashounes-Ashford Distinguished Scholar Award (2019), the nomination and induction as faculty to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society (2018), receiving the American College of Emergency Physicians recognition award for longevity in Emergency Medicine (2014), receiving the Academy of Women in Academic Emergency Medicine Momentum Award (2014), receiving the Unsung Hero award from the American Osteopathic Association (2014) , receiving the Soroptimist International Ruby Award (2010) for Women Helping Women; the Pennsylvania American College of Emergency Physicians 2005 Emergency Physician of the Year Award; the Physician Service Star Award (2004) for ER Preventive Health Initiatives; and the Koop Community Service Award (2000).
Dr. Greenberg is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and a long-standing member of the American Osteopathic Association and the Society of Academic Emergency Physicians. She is an internationally recognized expert and invited speaker on the topics of acute care medicine with particular emphasis on sex and gender in acute care medicine. Sine 2013 she has been a member of the national ACEP research committee and served a four-year term as incoming chair, chair elect, chair, and immediate past chair of their annual research forum (2019-2023). As the first woman and osteopathic physician in this role, during her tenure, she was integral to the development of a pipeline of diverse medical student scholars and junior faculty. Her tenure established a pathway for sustainability of diversity in ACEP future scholars. In 2014 she co-chaired the Academic Emergency Medicine Consensus Conference that put forth the national research agenda on Gender Specific Research in Emergency Medicine.
In the LVHN community, Dr. Greenberg was the inaugural medical director for the USF SELECT street medicine clinic at the Valley Youth House (2014-2022) and continues to serve as the Amigos de Guatemala Medical Director (international outreach).
