Thomas M. File Jr., MD, MSc, MACP, FIDSA, FCCP, is the Distinguished Physician of the Infectious Disease Division at Summa Health in Akron, Ohio, and Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine and Master Teacher of the Infectious Disease Section at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). After graduating from the University of Michigan Medical School, he earned a Master of Science in medical microbiology and completed his fellowship training in infectious diseases at The Ohio State University.

A nationally and internationally recognized authority in infectious diseases, Dr. File is a Past President of both the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID). He is a Master of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and an active member of the American Thoracic Society. Demonstrating a long-standing commitment to regional public health advocacy, he also served as a founding member and past president of the Northeastern Ohio Task Force on AIDS.

Dr. File’s clinical and research expertise centers on respiratory tract infections—with a renowned focus on community-acquired pneumonia—as well as antimicrobial stewardship, adult immunizations, and the evaluation of novel antimicrobial therapies. A prolific author and sought-after lecturer worldwide, he has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice. In recognition of his enduring leadership and clinical impact, Dr. File has been honored with the IDSA’s Watanakunakorn Clinician Award, the NFID’s John P. Utz Leadership Award, and the Summa Health Distinguished Physician Award.
