Ports of Call
Duck Key, Florida Keys
Your educational journey begins not on the ship, but on a sliver of paradise in the heart of the Florida Keys. Duck Key, your port of embarkation, is more than a starting point; it is an invitation to decompress, explore, and immerse yourself in the unique, laid-back rhythm of island life before your conference at sea even begins. We strongly encourage you to arrive one or two days early to shed the stresses of your demanding profession and fully embrace the restorative power of this remarkable destination.
Getting Here: The Journey is the Destination - Your transition into vacation mode starts the moment you leave the airport. You can fly into Miami (MIA), approximately a two-hour drive north, or Key West (EYW), about 90 minutes south. Rent a car and prepare for one of the most scenic drives in America: the Overseas Highway. This ribbon of road connects the archipelago, island by island, carrying you over breathtaking turquoise waters. The drive itself is an essential part of the experience, a gradual unwinding as the mainland fades in your rearview mirror. Consider it the perfect preamble to your well-deserved escape.
A Suggested Pre-Cruise Itinerary - Arriving early transforms your departure day from a logistical task into the culmination of a fantastic mini-vacation. Here’s how to make the most of your time:
Day 1: Arrival, Acclimation & Azure Waters - After your scenic drive, check into your accommodations on Duck Key, a tranquil enclave known for its picturesque canals and upscale resort atmosphere. Your first order of business is simple: nothing. Find a comfortable lounge chair by the saltwater lagoon or the adult-only pool. Order a cocktail, feel the gentle sea breeze, and watch the palm trees sway. This is your time to disconnect from your daily responsibilities and reconnect with a slower pace of life.
For dinner, you need not venture far. The Middle Keys are celebrated for their exceptional, fresh-from-the-dock seafood. Indulge in a meal of locally caught hogfish or yellowtail snapper at a waterfront restaurant. Dining with your feet in the sand while watching a spectacular sunset over the Gulf of Mexico is the quintessential Keys experience and the perfect end to your travel day.
Day 2: Discovery & The Spirit of the Keys - With a full day at your disposal, you can truly discover the soul of the Middle Keys. This region offers a blend of natural wonder and conservation-focused experiences that will resonate with your professional calling to serve and heal.
Morning: A Visit to The Turtle Hospital: Just a short drive away in Marathon is the world’s first state-licensed veterinary hospital for sea turtles. This is not a typical tourist attraction; it is a working hospital and a moving, educational experience. Take a guided tour to learn about the incredible rehabilitation efforts for injured turtles and meet the permanent residents. It’s an inspiring look at marine conservation in action.
Midday: The Seven Mile Bridge & A Perfect Beach: Drive over the modern Seven Mile Bridge, an engineering marvel offering panoramic ocean vistas. For an even better view, park and take a stroll or bike ride along the adjacent Old Seven Mile Bridge, a historic landmark that now serves as a popular recreational pier. Afterward, make your way to Sombrero Beach in Marathon. Often cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Keys, its soft white sand and calm, clear waters are ideal for a relaxing swim or simply soaking up the sun.
Afternoon: An Unforgettable Encounter: For a truly unique and intimate experience, consider a visit to the Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key or the Dolphin Connection right on Duck Key. These facilities focus on education and building a greater understanding of marine mammals through respectful, non-disruptive interaction programs. It’s a chance to learn from marine biologists and connect with these intelligent creatures in a meaningful way.
Evening: A Taste of Local Culture: For your final pre-cruise dinner, explore the culinary scene in Marathon. From rustic seafood shacks serving legendary fish tacos and conch fritters to more refined establishments with creative menus, there is something to suit every palate. Enjoy a final slice of authentic Key lime pie—tart, creamy, and utterly delicious—before returning to Duck Key for a restful night’s sleep.
By the time you walk the gangway to embark on your cruise, you will be fully relaxed, enriched by your experiences, and ready to engage with your colleagues and coursework. Starting your journey in Duck Key provides the perfect buffer between your demanding work life and your educational retreat, ensuring you begin your voyage in the perfect state of mind.
