Program Purpose / Objectives
Program Purpose: Topics will evaluate recent guidelines and how they should be implemented into the care of patients. Strategies to apply new therapies for critically ill patients with various common ICU diseases such as ARDS, cerebral vascular disease and severe infections will be discussed. A key focus will be on strategies to standardize protocols for staffing, exposure, mitigation and safety during surges in ICU patients. The importance of the contributions of the interprofessional healthcare team during a public health crisis will be addressed. Topics: Topics:

    • Assess respiratory failure using blood gases; to understand how to use a non-invasive ventilator to achieve optimal patient-support

  5. The “I” in ICU: Intensive not Invasive
    • Discuss how ICUs came to be invasive & what data we have for continuing some invasive practices
  6. Case of COVID-19 Critical Illness
  7. Anemia and transfusion triggers in the critically ill
    • Identify the appropriate transfusion trigger in the critically ill and the risks associated with transfusion
    • transfusion practices for massive transfusions.
  8. Critical review of the AHA CPR-ACLS guidelines
  9. Ethical case in the critically ill*
    • Understand the ethical issues that impact our ICU patients using a unique case
  10. ICU management of stroke patients
    • Critically review the management of acute embolic strokes and apply to your organization
  11. Antibiotic resistance: A global problem
    • Identify the global problem of antibiotic resistance and how it will impact the care of our critically ill infected patient.
  12. Infection control practices: What is the evidence?
    • Implement cost effective infection control measures in their practice.

Miami, FL  Daniel H. Kett, MD, is the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Critical Care at University of Miami Hospital and a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and his medical degree at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Kett completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Kett has strong clinical and research interests in severe ICU related infections, including invasive candidiasis and healthcare associated pneumonia,and infection control practices in the ICU.

Dr. Kett is an investigator for the Mycoses Study Group, a large multidisciplinary group of researchers with a primary focus on studying serious infections, and is active in several projects related to fungal infections in critically ill patients.

Results of his research have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, Chest, and the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Kett has presented at numerous scientific meetings and has been an invited lecturer at national and international conferences.

Hayley Gershengorn, MD

Hayley Gershengorn, MD
Hayley Beth Gershengorn is an associate professor and interim vice chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed a residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia. She is an associate editor for critical care of the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, on the program committee for critical care for the American Thoracic Society, and chair-elect for the Internal Medicine Section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Wearing many hats, Gershengorn also serves as the executive director for quality improvement at the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics, where she is involved in drafting procedures to standardize care delivery, exposure mitigation, and safety. As vice chief of the pulmonary/critical care division, she is working on a staffing strategy to care for expected surges in ICU patients.
