Essential Knowledge of Oral Cancer in Current Dental Practice

Presented by Dr. Ioannis Gkikas

The most common cancer affecting the mouth is the squamous cell carcinoma. It is likely that most dentists working in primary care will see only a few in their careers but missing one can be catastrophic for the patient as the earlier it is diagnosed and treated the better the prognosis.
The aim of this presentation is to give all the necessary knowledge that a modern dentist should have instead of be able not only diagnose the oral cancer but also adapt daily dental practice on oral cancer patient's needs.

Objectives:
  1. To become familiar with clinical presentation and differential diagnosis of oral cancer.
  2. To understand the importance of early diagnosis and contemporary screening models of oral cancer.
  3. To update their knowledge in staging system of oral cancer, current treatment modalities, and finally understand the factors affecting survival.
  4. To know how and when an oral cancer patient receives a dental treatment in their offices and of course all the specific features related to oral cancer patients.
Conference Sessions generally take place on days at sea (as itinerary allows), giving you plenty of time to enjoy your meals, evenings and ports of call with your companion, family and friends.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All conferees, their families, and guests must book their cruise within the University at Sea® meeting group through University at Sea® at 800-926-3775 or by registering online. Ports of Call

Athens (Piraeus), Greece - As the capital of Greece and one of Europe’s most bustling cities, Athens is powered by 5,000 years of history. At night, the city of Athens glows from afar, light reflecting off the ancient ruins. Today travelers flock from around the world to experience its history while on cruises from Athens. After all, the art, theatre, architecture, and philosophy of Athens had ripple effects through the fabric of entire civilizations.

Hydra, Greece - Featuring a stunning harbor, this artists’-haven island town is uniquely car-free (save for a lone fire truck). Luckily, you won’t have to go too far to discover the many charms of this isle, including beautiful beaches, tiny villages, and stunning mansions.

Mykonos, Greece - For pure Mediterranean pizzazz, Mykonos can't be beat. Designer boutiques and beautifully bronzed Greek gods and goddesses lie on Mykonos' beaches. And Mykonos' famous five white churches look down on it all in oblivious serenity.

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey - The UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ephesus impress even those familiar with the world's other ancient cities. Though excavations have been underway for 150 years, only 20 percent of the city has been uncovered. Check out the the Celsus Library — built in 117 A.D., the site is made up of towering columns highlighted by the statue of the goddess of wisdom. Cruises to Ephesus will give you a taste of Turkish life by strolling the seafront promenade and the bustling city center. Walk Marble Street, paved with actual marble slabs, which takes you from downtown to the Temple of Artemis — you can still see one lone remaining column from this wonder of the ancient world.

Rhodes, Greece - The crusader Knights of St. John made Rhodes their headquarters. Explore the massive fortress of the Palace of Grand Masters, and peer into tiny rooms of the Inns which once housed the knights. See where the towering Colossus of Rhodes once stood -- it could be seen for miles at sea!

Santorini, Greece - Here on the island of Santorini, you'll find a classic Greek seascape‐whitewashed houses accented by sea-blue roofs. This is a treasure trove for both professional and amateur archeology buffs, with sites that include tombs that date back to the 9th century and the sanctuary of Apollo.

Pylos, Greece - The beautiful seaside town of Pylos has a long and impressive history. Dating back to Neolithic times, it was a kingdom during the Bronze Age, a setting for Homer's Iliad, the site of the Battle of Pylos during the Peloponnesian War in 425 BC, and conquered by everyone from the Latin Empire to the Venetians. Today, Pylos remains a destination that attracts travelers from all over the world.

Corfu, Greece - Perched above the Adriatic Sea, Corfu, Greece is the second largest Ionian island, and its size is rivaled by its tremendous history and dynamic cultural identity. Cruise to Corfu and walk through the narrow streets of Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and marvel at the Italianate architecture left from centuries of Venetian rule. A number of scenes from the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" were filmed in the capital city of Corfu, and you'll understand why when you see the epic coastal roads and immense fortresses buttressing the town. With its rich combination of old fishing villages and immaculate beaches, Corfu is the perfect place to get lost in time during your vacation.

At Sea - Cruising - Cruising

Venice (Ravenna), Italy - Located on the Adriatic coast in North-East Italy, Ravenna was briefly the capital of the Roman Empire and later the Italian capital of the Byzantine Empire. During this time, incredible mosaics were constructed throughout the city. Described as a symphony of color in Dante's Divine Comedy, Ravenna's well-preserved mosaics are some of the finest remaining in the Western world.
