Program Purpose / Objectives

    • Exclude common and generally benign causes of cyanosis in the newborn
    • Consider and confidently diagnose cyanotic heart disease allowing for timely intervention and better outcomes

    • Define value in healthcare
    • Articulate the urgency to bend the cost curve
    • Explain several evidence-based practical solutions to improve value in practice today
  15. How Hospitalists Drive Quality in Patient Care
    • Articulate the patient and institutional impact on an early discharge initiative
    • Strategize how to formulate quality improvement projects that impact patient care
    • Recognize challenges to an early discharge initiative and other QI projects and develop adaptive strategies
  16. Update in the Management of Acute Liver Failure
    • Explain the impact of acute liver failure in the US
    • Apply the latest guidelines from the AASLD position paper on acute liver failure
    • Describe when to refer patients for transplantation

Professor Samuel Menahem from Melbourne, Australia is a Consultant Paediatrician with extensive experience in General Paediatrics and Neonatology. In addition he has researched and published widely on the interface of Child Psychiatry and Paediatrics and has trained as a Child Psychotherapist. He has a subspecialty of Paediatric Cardiology extending from the foetus to the adult with congenital heart disease.

He has held Consultant appointments at the Royal Children's Hospital both as a Physician and Cardiologist, and at Monash Medical Centre as a Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Cardiologist. He has previously headed the General Paediatric Unit and the Paediatric Cardiology Unit and was Foundation Co-Director of the Foetal Cardiac Unit at the latter institution. He continues to hold consultant appointments as a Paediatrician and Cardiologist.

Professor Menahem has an illustrious academic career. He graduated as top of his year from the University of Melbourne and subsequently successfully completed 4 research degrees. He gained his specialist qualification to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians after completing his residency. His Membership was subsequently elevated to a Fellowship of that College. He also is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.

He continues to teach and mentor students and graduates. He has also been a Visiting Professor and/or Examiner to institutions overseas and has presented and lectured at National and International Meetings. He continues to be active especially in clinical research and has an extensive publication list.

Professor Menahem now spends most of his time in private consultant practice and continues to conduct teaching clinics in rural Victoria. Many of his patients have stayed with him since infancy into adult life including a number of women with congenital heart disease who he has successfully cared for during their pregnancies. His utilizes a holistic approach in all his consultations.

New York, NY Katherine A. Hochman is currently the Associate Chair for Quality and the Assistant Chief of Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City as well as a practicing hospitalist. She is the founder and former Director of the NYU Hospital Medicine program, which grew from 1 to 35 hospitalists under her leadership. 

Katherine serves on national and local committees on quality and patient safety. Her most recent research has focused on maximizing hospital operational efficiency. Katherine's interests include creating a culture of safety, enhancing teamwork and leadership.

Miami, Florida - As far as vacation destinations go, Miami tops most sun-seekers’ lists. With its gorgeous beaches, vibrant neighborhoods and melting pot of cultures, the Magic City is the perfect place to spend a few days before your Caribbean island hop. Ahead of your cruise from Miami, jump-start your morning in true Miami style with a Cuban cafecito from a ventanita — a streetside shop window. Then climb the historic lighthouse at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on quiet Key Biscayne before lounging on the island’s secluded sandy shores. If you’re looking for a bit more action, head to South Beach — home to world-class restaurants, nightlife, shopping and lively beaches, all set against snap-worthy Art Deco buildings. Art lovers who visit Miami can head to Wynwood and explore the neighborhood’s colorful street murals and local galleries. Or take a trip back in time at the Renaissance-style Vizcaya estate, which offers a glimpse into Miami’s dazzling past.

Bimini, Bahamas - For such a tiny isle, Bimini packs a huge adventure punch. Alice Town buzzes with a low-key vibe, while sugary sands lead to scuba diving and snorkeling in bright-blue waters filled with shipwrecks. This is a small-island paradise for sun-seekers and anglers. Here you can check out Bimini Museum exhibits, hike the Bimini Nature Trail, or soak up fresh-from-the-sea Bahamian seafood.

Coco Cay, Bahamas - Located in the middle of the Caribbean's bright blue water lies the secluded island of CocoCay. With its white-sand beaches and spectacular surroundings, CocoCay is a wonderland of adventure. Reserved exclusively for Royal Caribbean guests, this tropical paradise has recently been updated with new aquatic facilities, nature trails and a ton of great places to just sit back, relax and enjoy a tropical drink.

Puerto Plata, Dom. Rep. - In Puerto Plata, you’ll be greeted by verdant mountains, pristine beaches, and nature-filled adventures. Go for a swim at the awe-inspiring 27 Waterfalls complex. Hike through the lush, protected jungle of El Choco National Park, enjoying the park’s two lagoons. Swim with dolphins at World Ocean, the largest manmade dolphin habitat in the world, or grab a kayak and head out on the water at Manatee Reserve.

For history buffs, tour the Fortress of San Felipe and travel back in time to Spanish occupation. Don’t leave the Domincan Republic without sampling locally distilled rum or delicacies like la bandera and mofongo.
