Resilience and Emotional Intelligence: What do They Have to do With Nursing?
PURPOSE STATEMENT
All too often, nurses experience feelings of frustration, anger, despair, and moral distress related to the biased unfairness or injustices inherent in our modern-day healthcare system. It’s an emotion that we often experience when we are unable to set boundaries or ask for what we need, or when expectations let us down because they were based on things we can’t control, like what our patients are willing to do, what procedures the insurance company is willing to cover, what our patient assignments look like, or what our expectations are of ourselves. Nurses also experience various levels of fatigue that can last a short period of time or feel never ending. Join us in a discussion on resilience, emotional intelligence, fatigue and somatics and how these concepts help us to realize that the key to experiencing less anger and moral distress in our career is accepting how much control we don’t have in a typical day. Participants will understand basic concepts of which concerted actions and personal techniques can enhance each individual’s personal journey to transform resentments and negative thoughts that lead to burnout to one of acceptance that transient negative emotions do not make us failures or bad people, but simply give us the opportunity to experience the full spectrum of human emotions and the power to understand that the ability to heal what is necessary to heal, comes from within.
LEARNING OUTCOME
Participants will be able to self-identify techniques and actions that can minimize moral distress experienced as a healthcare practitioner.
OBJECTIVES
- Identify the components of moral distress
- Identify the components of fatigue
- Identify the components of resilience
- Identify the components of emotional intelligence
- Discuss the sphere of concern vs. sphere of influence

Ports of Call
Southampton (London), England - "Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." Samuel Johnson's famous words are as true today as when he spoke them. A visitor to London could fill a month with fascinating people, art, music, late-night dancing, fabulous shopping, an endless array of pubs and first rate meals.
Tourists should take in Victoria Station, the beauty of Westminster Abbey, Parliament, and the pomp of Buckingham Palace. And then, there are the "Elgin Marbles" at the British Museum and the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. Or visit Sherlock Holmes' HQ on Baker Street (you know the address). After all that, make what might be the most important stop of all: grab a pint at one of the many corner pubs that's been hosting revelers since before America was a nation.
London is most certainly a place to "take in," not just "pass through." You won't be bored.
After your time in London, you'll transfer to Southampton to board your ship and start your cruise conference. Options for doing that from bus transport to the train (which is very near the cruise port in Southampton) to private taxi are all solid choices.
At Sea - Cruising - Cruising
Vigo, Spain - Catholic pilgrims flock to the nearby sacred cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, built over the burial spot of St. James. In Vigo, Galicia province's most populated city, El Sireno, a gilded sculpture depicting a half-man-half-sea-creature, towers over your head and the city's lovely gardens and well-preserved historical buildings.
Lisbon, Portugal - Make your own discoveries in the city that launched the Age of Discovery. Cross the River Tagus on its soaring suspension bridge. Wander the maze of streets in the Alfama, the old Moorish quarter, dominated by the medieval Castle of St. George where peacocks strut and shriek. Stroll the Baixa, shop for elegant shoes.
La Coruna, Spain - La Coruna has tons to offer the curious traveler. You can explore the delightful region of Spain known as Galacia, see a Roman lighthouse built in the second century which is still in use today, and glimpse La Coruna'a ancient past in the celtic stone monoliths. Appreciaters of nature can look out over the verdant countryside, small coves, and magnificent coastlines.
