Doctor Kris Vijay received his medical degree from the Kasturba Medical College, University of Mysore, India, in 1979, and postgraduate training in medicine in Bombay, India, in Oxford, UK and in Rochester, New York. He served a fellowship in nephrology at KEM Hospital in Bombay, endocrinology and diabetes at University of Southampton, UK and a fellowship in cardiology at Good Samaritan Medical Center, University of Arizona, in Phoenix. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the University of Michigan



Dr. Vijay is the Medical Director of the Institute of Congestive Heart Failure at Abrazo Arizona Heart Institute and Hospital in Phoenix. He is a Non-invasive Cardiologist, a clinical lipidologist, an ardent researcher and a Heart Failure specialist .He has been in clinical practice in Arizona for more than 27 years.



Dr. Vijay is a past Governor of the American College of Cardiology, Arizona Chapter, past President of the National Lipid Association, South West chapter, a founding member and past President of the Cardio Renal Society of America and current President of the TWINEPIDEMIC, Inc., a nonprofit organization addressing Diabetes and Heart disease among Ethnic Communities all over the world. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, National Lipid association and Heart Failure Society of America. He is a member of the clinical cardiology council as well as council for Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology at American Heart Association, a member of Prevention and Cardio-metabolic committee at American College of Cardiology and an Executive Board member of the National Lipid Association.



Dr. Vijay is a founding member of the Arizona Managed Care Quality Enhancement Program (AMCQEP), 1992, and received the Governor's award from Health Services Advisory Group (HSAG), October 2002, an innovation award through the Center for Health Innovation and Clinical Trial (CHI&CT) at Arizona State University from the President of Arizona State University in 2010 and the Jerome Markowitz award for a distinguished career from South Asian Society of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis in 2013. He was one of the three nominees of Healthcare Heroes award for Phoenix Business Journal towards Life time achievement in 2017.



Dr. Vijay has participated in more than 180 clinical trials and his research is focused on such disorders as congestive heart failure, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, coronary artery disease, plaque regression, Atrial Fibrillation, peripheral vascular disease and diabetes/metabolic syndrome. He has published more than 100 articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Vijay serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of Arizona, Phoenix and as an adjunct Professor of Medicine at Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM).



He has presented at numerous national and International meetings on diabetes and heart disease His professional activities also include serving on Editorial Boards of medical journals, reviewing landmark guidelines and policy statements and serving on many important advisory boards dealing with Quality initiatives of national organizations.

David Weiland, Jr., MD
Dr. David Weiland is Board Certified in Internal Medicine & currently works with Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care. He is also working as the Director of Palliative Care at Advent Hospital in North Pinellas County. He has significant administrative and quality experience as Chief Medical Officer at HCA/Largo Medical Center for 5 years. He also served as the VPMA of Bayfront Medical Center for four years.

Dr. Weiland was Medical Director of Suncoast Hospice, where he oversaw quality, community outreach and developed inpatient hospice units and hospital-based palliative care teams. In addition, Dr. Weiland has served as Family Practice Faculty for the University of South Florida. He was board certified in Internal Medicine as well as Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Weiland has served on numerous community boards including current Chairman of the Pinellas EMS Advisory Committee and the Pinellas County Commission Pill Mill Task Force dealing with illicit pain medication prescribing. He was the past president of the Pinellas County Medical Association and continues to take an active role in PCMA and FMA activities.

He lectures and presents clinical presentations nationally for the AAFP, including a diverse array of palliative and primary care topics including The Physiological Benefits of Humor, Medical Ethics, Depression, Alzheimer's Disease, Palliative Pain Management, Quality and Patient safety issues as well as conducts workshops on patient-centered communication to enhance the patient care experience.

For a relaxed day, the town is highly walkable. The centerpiece is Creek Street, a historic boardwalk built on pilings over the water. Tracy Arm is not a port for disembarking but an immersive scenic experience, best spent on deck regardless of the weather. The day is dedicated to navigating the narrow, 30-mile-long fjord, where the sheer scale of the landscape is humbling. Granite walls rise thousands of feet directly from the water, streaked with countless waterfalls that cascade down the rock faces. The waterway is often dotted with floating ice, from small "growlers" to larger, brilliantly blue icebergs that serve as resting spots for harbor seals. The journey culminates at the twin Sawyer Glaciers, massive rivers of ancient, compressed ice. If conditions permit, the ship will linger, offering a chance to witness the dramatic spectacle of calving, where immense chunks of ice break away and crash into the sea. This is a purely observational day. We advise finding a good vantage point early, dressing in warm, waterproof layers, and keeping binoculars and a camera at the ready. The raw, powerful beauty of the fjord is the main event.

As a port of call, it offers perhaps the most accessible high-adventure opportunities in Alaska, though managing expectations regarding weather and crowds is essential for a quality experience.

The Mendenhall Glacier is the undisputed centerpiece. While the Visitor Center offers a solid introduction, the glacier has receded significantly in recent years. To truly grasp the scale of the Juneau Icefield, we recommend a helicopter excursion. Landing on the glacier or dog sledding on the ice cap is a significant investment, but it provides a visceral connection to the landscape that a distant view from the visitor center cannot match. If you prefer to stay grounded, the hike to Nugget Falls offers a powerful view of the glacier's face and a roaring waterfall without the flight costs.

Juneau’s waters are among the most productive feeding grounds for humpback whales in the world. Sightings in Auke Bay are exceptionally reliable during the cruise season. If you have not booked a wildlife excursion elsewhere on your itinerary, this is the place to do it.

Downtown Juneau is compact and historic, though South Franklin Street can feel congested when multiple ships are in port. For a sophisticated cultural break, the Alaska State Museum is outstanding, housing world-class exhibits on Native Alaskan heritage and Russian history. The Mount Roberts Tramway, located right at the dock, offers sweeping views, but we advise purchasing tickets only after assessing the cloud cover; the view is spectacular, but non-existent in heavy fog.

For a culinary finish, skip the generic tourist traps and visit Tracy’s King Crab Shack for genuine local flavor. Juneau is a wet city—it lies in a temperate rainforest—so dress in waterproof layers to enjoy this spectacular intersection of civilization and wild frontier.

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE
