PROGRAM TOPICS

Purpose Based on the most recent data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), in the year 2011-2012, nearly 70% of adult Americans were overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) or obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). Obesity is recognized as a multifactorial, chronic, inflammatory disease whereby excess body fat is accumulated through complex interactions between the environment, genetic predisposition, human metabolism, neuroendocrine and behavioral factors. At any given time, an estimated 55% of the population is participating in a medically managed or self-selected weight-loss program, with the majority of participants failing to lose or sustain weight loss. Of those successful with weight loss, > 60% will regain their lost weight by the end of year one following their initial weight loss success. Fewer than 15% of adults participate in regular exercise and over 65% of adults are sedentary. Lifestyle and behavioral interventions form the foundation for the management of cardiovascular risk factors to achieve improved short- and long-term outcomes, including measures of quality of life. Hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and inflammation are the primary modifiable components arising from obesity and overweight. Research has demonstrated that successful management of obesity and overweight requires both sustained lifestyle changes with frequent follow-up as well as the simultaneous medical management of cardiovascular risk factors. The increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight in patients impacts the clinical decisions, management strategies and health outcomes of all health care clinicians, regardless of their clinical specialty. Thus, this conference has been designed with the overall objective to equip healthcare providers with the most current scientific clinical research examining the magnitude of the problem, genetic and environmental causes, pathophysiology, and complications related to the obesity epidemic. This understanding will be translated into the clinical setting throughout the conference with current evidence-based strategies for the practical treatment of obesity and its related comorbidities. Topics:
  1. The impact of obesity as a chronic disease on our health care system.
    • Examine the pervasiveness of obesity as a chronic disease, the propensity of interrelated co-morbidities, and the impact on health.
  2. Mechanisms linking excess adiposity to metabolic dysregulation.

  3. Mood disorders associated with insulin resistance and obesity.
    • Assess how selected obesity-related complications, such as mood disorders, eating disorders, and sleep apnea impact management strategies.

    • Evaluate new recommendations in the use of current pharmacologic agents and the future development of agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and overweight.
  5. The role that genetics plays in the obesity epidemic.
    • Distinguish the relationship between genetics and environment in the etiology of obesity.
  6. The efficacy of bariatric surgery and the management of bariatric patients.
    • Describe the efficacy of bariatric surgical procedures on the pathophysiology and management of type 2 diabetes and obesity.
  7. Lifestyle and behavioral strategies and interventions for the management of diabetes, obesity and overweight.
    • Examine the interrelationship between physical exercise, diet, intestinal microbiome and the body immune system that underlie rational management of obesity.

Duane C. Eichler, PhD, is currently a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida. Prior to his retirement in June 2012, Dr. Eichler served as Professor and Vice Chair of Molecular Medicine. He held two joint appointments: Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, and Professor in the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences. He was also the Basic Science Director of the Signature Interdisciplinary Program in Cardiovascular Research at USF Health.

Dr. Eichler received his undergraduate training in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry at San Jose State University, graduating with Great Distinction. He earned his PhD in Biological Chemistry from UCLA, followed by postdoctoral training at the Stanford University School of Medicine. In June 1977, he joined the Department of Biochemistry (later renamed Molecular Medicine) in the College of Medicine at the University of South Florida.

Dr. Eichler remains active by providing invited talks and consultations, and he currently chairs The Villages Community Advisory Council, providing oversight of cooperative, university-related clinical research activities.

Frances M. Sahebzamani (Rankin), PhD, ARNP, FAANP, is an Adult Nurse Practitioner at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. She joined Moffitt's Team Member Medical Clinic in June 2014 to develop, implement, and manage the Healthy Weight and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Program, which focuses on treating patients with obesity and metabolic dysregulation.

Prior to joining the Moffitt team, Dr. Sahebzamani served as an Assistant Professor in the University of South Florida (USF) College of Medicine's Family Medicine Division for 23 years, where she also practiced in the college's Family Medicine Clinic. In 2006, she was recruited to the USF College of Nursing to develop and direct their Advanced Nursing Practice Doctorate (DNP) Program.

Dr. Sahebzamani is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Her clinical practice expertise lies in primary care, obesity, metabolic dysregulation, and preventive cardiology. Her dedicated research program mirrors her clinical work, emphasizing obesity, metabolic dysregulation, and cardiovascular risk reduction within primary care settings.

Livorno is less a destination in itself and more a golden ticket to the heart of Tuscany. The critical decision for your day here is choosing between the artistic grandeur of Florence and the iconic architecture of Pisa, both accessible via a significant journey from the port.

The primary draw is, of course, Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. A 75- to 90-minute journey by train or coach transports you to a city of overwhelming beauty. A day trip here demands a clear, focused plan. We strongly advise choosing one major museum—either the Uffizi Gallery for its masterpieces by Botticelli and Leonardo, or the Accademia Gallery to stand in awe before Michelangelo's David. Pre-booking tickets is absolutely essential to avoid wasting precious hours in line. Beyond the museums, the city's magic is in its streets. Stroll across the jewelry-laden Ponte Vecchio, marvel at the sheer scale of Brunelleschi's Duomo, and find a small trattoria for an authentic plate of fresh pasta. Always be mindful of the clock; the return journey is just as long.

For a more manageable, yet equally memorable day, Pisa is an excellent choice. The main attraction is the Piazza dei Miracoli, or 'Field of Miracles,' where the legendary Leaning Tower, the magnificent Cathedral, and the Baptistery create an unforgettable architectural ensemble. The experience is more concentrated and less sprawling than Florence, allowing for a more relaxed pace. Many travelers wisely pair Pisa with a visit to nearby Lucca, a beautifully preserved medieval city encircled by intact Renaissance-era walls, perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride.

Should you prefer to stay local, Livorno offers its own modest charms. Explore the Venezia Nuova district, a network of canals reminiscent of its more famous namesake, or visit the bustling Mercato Centrale for a taste of authentic local life.

Civitavecchia serves a singular purpose: it is the industrial gateway to Rome. The Eternal City lies roughly 75 to 90 minutes away by road or rail, making your time ashore a logistical challenge that rewards strategy over spontaneity. We cannot overstate the importance of this commute; treat the journey as a tactical necessity to access one of the most culturally dense cities on earth.

With a typical port day, attempting to see 'everything' guarantees nothing but exhaustion. We strongly recommend curating your day around one of three distinct tracks to ensure a quality experience.

First, the Imperial Track. Focus on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Walking the Via Sacra offers a tangible connection to the origins of Western law and governance. However, admission lines here can consume hours; pre-purchased, timed-entry tickets are not optional—they are essential.

Second, the Vatican Track. St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums hold an overwhelming concentration of artistic wealth. Standing beneath Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling is profound, but the crowds are equally intense. Strict dress codes (shoulders and knees covered) are enforced, and guided access is the only way to navigate the vast collections efficiently within a limited window.

Third, the Centro Storico. For those who prefer atmosphere over checklists, a walking tour of the historic center offers a more relaxed pace. Start at the Pantheon—the world’s best-preserved ancient building—then wander to Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain. This approach allows time for a proper Roman lunch. Avoid restaurants directly facing major monuments; walk two streets back to find authentic cacio e pepe or carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style artichokes). A rushed sandwich does a disservice to Italian culinary heritage, whereas a seated meal offers a necessary respite from the sensory overload.

Regardless of your choice, Rome demands respect for the clock. Always build a significant buffer for your return trip to Civitavecchia to ensure a stress-free conclusion to a spectacular day.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION
