The purpose of these lectures is to recognize the evolving role pharmacogenomics is playing in the delivery of personalized medicine. Common sources for medication-related miscommunications and how poor medication adherence impacts the clinical and economic outcomes for patient, providers, and stakeholders will also be covered. George E. MacKinnon III, PhD, MS, RPh, FASHP
Founding Dean and Professor of Pharmacy School of Pharmacy Medical College of Wisconsin Milwaukee, WIDr. George E. MacKinnon III began responsibilities as Founding Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Wisconsin October 1, 2015. His primary academic appointment is as Professor of Pharmacy Administration with secondary appointments within the School of Medicine in the Institute for Health and Equity (Division of Population Health Improvement), Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center. Dr. MacKinnon received both his BS (Pharmacy) and MS (Hospital Pharmacy) from University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. He completed two-years of post-graduate clinical pharmacy residency training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, earning his PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Loyola University Chicago. Over the past 30 years he has held academic appointments in medicine and pharmacy engaging in clinical practice, research, teaching, and academic administration. His previous appointments include Founding Dean of Pharmacy & Vice Provost for Health Sciences at Roosevelt University Chicago, Vice President of Academic Affairs with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and Director of Global Health Economics & Outcomes Research of Abbott Laboratories, in Chicago. Dr. MacKinnon has engaged in significant curricular pharmacy innovation (e.g., accelerated graduation and non- traditional pathways, integrated curricula, and interprofessional education) and post-graduate training development. He taught one of the first required courses in health economics and outcomes assessment and is Editor of the textbook, Understanding Health Outcomes and Pharmacoeconomic. His research interests align in expanding pharmacist care models (e.g., primary care, pharmacogenomics, immunizations).

Assistant Professor and Director of Outreach Department of Clinical Sciences Medical College of Wisconsin Milwaukee, WIIn her role at MCW, Professor MacKinnon is responsible for developing corporate partnerships, activities and services that support the creation of new pharmacy practice models. Professor MacKinnon has over 25 years of experience in teaching and has assisted in the establishment of three previous academic pharmacy programs, having served in the roles of Director of Experiential Education and Director of Professional Laboratories. Professor MacKinnon has practiced in institutional and community pharmacy practice settings throughout her career. Professor MacKinnon is currently engaged with local and state immunization grants to support pharmacists’ role in optimizing and expanding immunization access in Wisconsin.

Taylor MacKinnon received his Doctor of Pharmacy at Creighton University and completed a residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration at the UW Health. As the Pharmacy Manager of C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital, he oversees and is responsible for decentralized pharmacy clinical services (critical care and general service lines) and operational pharmacy services (hazardous/non-hazardous). As an adjunct clinical instructor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, he precepts pharmacy learners (students, interns, and residents). Additionally, he is actively involved in several national (Vizient & ASHP) and state (MSHP) organizations.

Your Pre-Cruise Itinerary Suggestion: - Day 1: Canals, Culture, and Cuisine

After settling into your hotel, your first experience should be the one that defines the city: its waterways. Forget the rental car and embrace the Water Taxi. It’s not just transportation; it’s a brilliant sightseeing tour. As you cruise the 165 miles of inland canals, you’ll glide past stunning waterfront mansions, mega-yachts, and lush tropical gardens. Day 2: Beachfront Bliss and Natural Wonders - Dedicate your morning to the iconic Fort Lauderdale Beach. This isn’t a rustic, deserted island; it’s a world-class urban beach, known for its wide, clean stretch of sand and the beautifully designed beachfront promenade. Rent a lounge chair and simply relax, or take a long walk along the signature “wave wall.” The atmosphere is vibrant yet far more relaxed than its southern neighbor, Miami Beach.

2. Wilderness Adventure: Experience the Florida Everglades. Several reputable operators offer half-day tours that include transportation and an unforgettable airboat ride. Skimming across the “River of Grass” is a thrilling experience, providing a profound sense of this unique ecosystem’s vastness. You’re almost guaranteed to see alligators in their natural habitat, along with a variety of wading birds. Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata offers a refreshing contrast to the manicured perfection of private cruise islands. Located on the Dominican Republic’s lush "Amber Coast," this destination is best approached with a spirit of adventure. While the immediate port areas are modern, the true value lies in the region's natural topography and colonial history.

The undisputed highlight for active travelers is the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua. This is not a passive sightseeing tour; it is a physical excursion involving hiking, sliding down natural chutes, and jumping into limestone pools. It is exhilarating, but we advise clients to assess their physical comfort level honestly before booking—it requires agility and stamina.

For a panoramic perspective with less exertion, the Teleférico (cable car) ascends Mount Isabel de Torres. At the summit, you will find botanical gardens and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. Cloud cover can obscure the view by afternoon, so we recommend prioritizing this early in the day.

Closer to sea level, the historic town center features charming Victorian "gingerbread" architecture surrounding the Plaza Independencia. A visit to the Amber Museum provides context to the region's namesake export, while the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe offers a tangible connection to the island's colonial defense. Puerto Plata is not a polished metropolis, but for those willing to explore, it delivers a genuine and engaging Caribbean experience.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

Charlotte Amalie is the heavy hitter of Caribbean cruising—energetic, scenic, and frequently crowded. While often marketed solely as a duty-free shopping haven, the island offers substantial rewards for those willing to look past the jewelry stores lining Main Street. The town itself is a steep amphitheater of red-roofed Danish colonial buildings rising from the harbor. For history buffs, a walk up the "99 Steps" (built from ship ballast bricks) or a visit to the red-walled Fort Christian provides context often missed by the average shopper.

Most visitors are here for the water. Magens Bay is the headline attraction—a heart-shaped, protected cove that is visually stunning but often packed with fellow cruisers. For a more relaxed experience with superior snorkeling, we recommend Sapphire Beach or the pristine, protected sands of Smith Bay Park (Lindquist Beach). If your ship docks at Havensight, the Skyride to Paradise Point offers the classic Caribbean vista and a convenient spot for a local Bushwacker cocktail.

Crucial Logistics: St. Thomas has two distinct cruise piers: Havensight (closer to town/Skyride) and Crown Bay (further west). Be sure to check your docking location, as it dictates your walking options. Traffic in Charlotte Amalie can be gridlocked in the afternoons; always pad your return time. Getting around is best done via "safari" taxis—converted open-air trucks. They are efficient and affordable, but confirm the fare before boarding. For those who have visited St. Thomas before, the ferry to neighboring St. John offers a quieter, more natural escape, though it requires careful time management.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan offers one of the most sophisticated and accessible experiences in the Caribbean. Unlike ports requiring long transfers to see anything of value, Old San Juan greets you immediately upon disembarkation. This 500-year-old walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored independently on foot, allowing you to bypass crowded bus tours and move at your own pace.

Your priority should be the two massive citadels guarding the coast. Start at Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fortification in the New World, before walking the scenic coastal trail to the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The sheer scale of these defenses is humbling, and the expansive green lawn leading to El Morro—often dotted with kites—provides a dramatic contrast to the deep blue Atlantic.

Between the forts lies a grid of blue cobblestone streets (adoquines) lined with vibrant colonial architecture. The joy here is aimless wandering, though the heat can be intense; stay hydrated and wear sturdy walking shoes to navigate the hills. For a cultural pause, visit the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the resting place of Ponce de León.

Culinary exploration is essential. Skip the generic tourist traps near the pier and head deeper into the city. Seek out mofongo (garlicky mashed plantains) at a local staple like El Jibarito or Café Puerto Rico. While the nearby beaches of Condado are beautiful, they require a taxi and contend with traffic. Unless you have visited before, we advise dedicating your day entirely to the history and atmosphere within the city walls, finishing perhaps with a Piña Colada at Barrachina, right in the heart of the old town.

Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau is a bustling, high-energy hub that requires a strategic approach to appreciate fully. The immediate port area is often congested and commercialized; your best experience lies in navigating beyond the souvenir stalls to find the island’s genuine character.

For a meaningful dose of history, a short walk leads to the Queen's Staircase, a remarkable 66-step passage carved from solid limestone by enslaved people in the 18th century. It ascends to Fort Fincastle, offering commanding views of the island and a quiet respite from the downtown noise. For a more refined local taste, the John Watling's Distillery on the historic Buena Vista Estate provides tours and tastings in a setting that feels worlds away from the cruise terminal.

If a classic beach day is your priority, we advise looking beyond the nearest options, which can be crowded and underwhelming. A taxi to the expansive sands of Cable Beach or, for a more curated experience, a day pass to one of the major resorts on Paradise Island will provide the tranquil, turquoise-water escape you envision. These passes often grant access to pristine private beaches and high-quality amenities, turning a potentially hectic port day into a truly relaxing one.

For the most authentic local flavor, take a taxi to Arawak Cay, known as 'The Fish Fry.' This is where Bahamians go for fresh conch salad, fried snapper, and a vibrant, casual atmosphere. It offers a true taste of the islands that the port-side buffets simply cannot match.
