Ports of Call
Southampton (London), England

A Perfect Pre-Cruise Itinerary - Imagine arriving at Heathrow or Gatwick, whisked into the city center via the swift Express trains, and settling into your hotel. For ultimate convenience, consider accommodations near Waterloo Station. Not only is it a major hub on the Underground (“the Tube”), making exploration effortless, but it is also the direct departure point for your stress-free train journey to the Southampton cruise terminal.

Day 1: A Journey Through Royal & Historic London - Once settled, begin your exploration in the heart of British power and pageantry. Start at Westminster, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stand in awe before the Gothic splendor of Westminster Abbey, the nation’s coronation church for nearly a millennium and the final resting place of monarchs, poets, and scientists. Gaze upon the iconic Elizabeth Tower (home to Big Ben) and the Houses of Parliament. From there, enjoy a classic London stroll through St. James's Park, a beautiful green space leading directly to the gates of Buckingham Palace. Time your visit to witness the world-famous Changing of the Guard ceremony for a dose of quintessential British pomp.
In the afternoon, delve into a darker, more dramatic chapter of history at the formidable Tower of London. Here, the captivating tales of intrigue and royal drama are brought to life by the Yeoman Warders (the famous ‘Beefeaters’). The undisputed highlight is the Crown Jewels, an extraordinary collection of over 100 objects and 23,000 gemstones that must be seen to be believed. Afterward, take a walk across the iconic Tower Bridge for breathtaking views of the fortress and the modern city skyline. As evening descends, make your way to the glittering West End. Enjoy a pre-theatre dinner in the vibrant Covent Garden district before taking in a world-class musical—an experience that epitomizes London's dynamic cultural scene.
Day 2: Culture, Cuisine, and Unforgettable Views - Your second day offers a chance to explore London's world-class museums, many of which offer free general admission. History and archaeology buffs can lose themselves in the British Museum, home to global treasures like the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon Marbles. For those with a passion for art and design, the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum in South Kensington is an unparalleled repository of decorative arts spanning centuries and continents.

For lunch, immerse yourself in the sensory delight of Borough Market. A historic food market near London Bridge, it’s a bustling haven for food lovers, brimming with artisanal cheeses, gourmet street food, fresh oysters, and specialty coffees. In the afternoon, see the city from a different perspective with a breathtaking rotation on the London Eye. The glass pods lift you high above the Thames for iconic 360-degree vistas, connecting the historic landmarks you saw on day one with the sprawling modern metropolis. Afterward, enjoy a leisurely walk along the South Bank, passing Shakespeare's Globe and the Tate Modern art gallery.
For a final, indulgent experience, treat yourself to the quintessential British tradition of afternoon tea at a classic hotel, complete with delicate sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and exquisite pastries. Or, for a more casual evening, find a traditional pub that has been welcoming patrons for centuries, enjoy a pint of ale, and savor some hearty pub fare like fish and chips or a classic Sunday roast.
On embarkation day, you’ll enjoy a relaxed morning before taking the comfortable, direct train from Waterloo to Southampton Central (a journey of about 90 minutes). A short taxi ride from the station will have you at your cruise terminal, your spirit already buzzing with the magic of London. It’s the perfect, sophisticated start to your incredible journey.
At Sea - Cruising
Bordeaux (La Rochelle), France
Bilbao, Spain
Beyond the museum, Bilbao reveals its historic soul in the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter). A short walk or tram ride away, this labyrinth of the original 'Siete Calles' (Seven Streets) is a vibrant hub of shops, centuries-old buildings, and the Gothic Santiago Cathedral. This is the heart of Basque culinary culture. The essential experience here is the 'txikiteo,' a convivial crawl from one bar to the next, sampling 'pintxos'—small, artful bites that are a cornerstone of local life. Plaza Nueva is an excellent starting point for this gastronomic adventure.
It is important to note that cruise ships dock in Getxo, a coastal town about 20-30 minutes from Bilbao’s city center. Taxis, cruise line shuttles, and an efficient metro system make the journey straightforward. This separation allows for a pleasant transition from the seaside into the dynamic, culture-rich core of the Basque Country's most compelling city.
La Coruna, Spain

If you remain in La Coruña, the undisputed highlight is the Tower of Hercules. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the world's oldest functioning Roman lighthouse, and climbing its steps rewards you with commanding views of the rugged coastline. From there, a stroll along the expansive Paseo Marítimo seaside promenade leads to the city’s historic heart. The Old Town (Ciudad Vieja) is a delightful maze of stone lanes, quiet squares, and Romanesque churches. It eventually opens onto the grand Plaza de María Pita, the city’s main square, dominated by its stately city hall. Don’t miss the iconic 'galerías'—glass-enclosed balconies that line the harbor front, earning La Coruña the nickname “The Crystal City.” Galician cuisine is a highlight; seek out a local restaurant for exceptional seafood, particularly *pulpo a feira* (market-style octopus), paired with a crisp Albariño wine.
Alternatively, a full-day excursion to Santiago de Compostela is a truly worthwhile endeavor. As the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, the city has a palpable spiritual and historical weight. The magnificent Cathedral, which houses the tomb of St. James, is the breathtaking centerpiece of a city built from granite and faith. La Coruña offers a genuine taste of a different Spain—one defined by its Celtic roots, Atlantic soul, and profound history.
Paris (Le Havre), France
A day trip to Paris is feasible, but it is a significant commitment. The journey is typically 2.5 to 3 hours each way by bus or train, consuming a large portion of your day. This leaves a condensed window to experience one of the world's great capitals. A realistic Paris day involves seeing iconic landmarks from the exterior—the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Élysées—and perhaps a brief stroll through a charming neighborhood like Le Marais or Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A deep dive into the Louvre or a leisurely multi-course meal is generally not practical. It is a day for impressions, not immersion.
Alternatively, the surrounding region of Normandy offers rich, more accessible rewards. The charming port of Honfleur, with its slate-fronted houses and vibrant harbor painted by Monet, is less than 30 minutes away. The historic city of Rouen, where Joan of Arc was tried and martyred, boasts a magnificent Gothic cathedral and a beautifully preserved medieval center. For those interested in 20th-century history, the D-Day landing beaches are a powerful and moving full-day excursion. Visiting Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer provides a somber, unforgettable perspective on the sacrifices made here. Le Havre itself, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its post-war modernist architecture, offers a unique look at urban renewal for those seeking a low-key day.
We can assist you with all your travel arrangements. We'd be happy to help you plan your flights, hotels, or tours before and/or after your cruise conference.
