PROGRAM TOPICS

These lectures are intended to provide medical care providers interested in the practice of clinical cardiology, the prevention and management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and lipid management a review of the clinical applicability and evidence-base for the most recent standards of care in diagnosis and therapy. These health-care providers function as the captain of the healthcare team in the outpatient and inpatient setting. By coordinating resources amongst mid-level providers, nurses, pharmacists, medical assistants and administrative support staff, the primary care provider can help achieve optimal clinical outcomes for their patients afflicted by cardiovascular diseases. To fulfill this mission, the provider must understand the risks and benefits, costs, clinical pitfalls and limitations of evaluation and treatment strategies advocated by current practice standards and guidelines.

Assessment of Acute Chest Pain
- Apply appropriate risk stratification of the chest pain patient to deliver best clinical outcomes and optimally use health care resources
Management of Acute Coronary Artery Syndrome
- Deliver best clinical outcomes and optimally use health care resources by rapid and cost-effective triage of patients presenting with acute coronary artery syndromes.
Management of Congestive Heart Failure
- Deliver best clinical outcomes and optimally use health care resources by understanding novel cardiac imaging modalites and pharmacotherapies available to clinicians in both the inpatient and outpatient management of congestive heart failure
Management of Venous Thromboembolism: DVT and Pulmonary Embolism
- Introduce novel treatment strategies for the prevention and management, that incorporate outpatient and inpatient options for therapy, and reduce morbidity and mortality
Cardiac Risk Assessment: Risk calculators and Cardiac Imaging
- Reduce risk to patients of major adverse cardiovascular events through early detection and institution of evidence-based treatment strategies.
Management of Hyperlipidemia
- Apply evidence-based criteria to incorporate lifestyle interventions and all available pharmacotherapy options for patients at risk for, or those with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.
Anticoagulation for Atrial Fibrillation
- Avoid unnecessary use of anticoagulant therapies in patients at low-risk for thromboembolic events, and optimize use of newer and safer direct oral anticoagulant therapies.

Dr. Khalid H. Sheikh is a preventative cardiologist specializing in cardiac wellness, longevity, and cardiovascular imaging. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases, holding additional sub-specialty certifications in echocardiography, cardiac CT imaging, and advanced lipid management. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Sheikh serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Duke University Global Health Institute.

A dedicated researcher and global health advocate, Dr. Sheikh’s passion for global heart health has led him to deliver volunteer medical services, teach, and conduct research in medically underserved countries. He has served as the principal investigator in over 100 national and international clinical trials and has authored more than 150 scientific abstracts, peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and reviews. Dr. Sheikh frequently speaks at national and international forums on cardiovascular disease and cardiac wellness, and he is the author of the critically acclaimed heart wellness book, "Don’t Let Your Heart Attack."

Basseterre, St. Kitts

St. Kitts stands out in the Caribbean for its dramatic topography and deep colonial history, offering a richer experience than the standard beach-only destination. The island is dominated by dormant volcanoes and lush rainforests, providing a backdrop that feels wilder and more rugged than many of its neighbors.

The premier attraction is undoubtedly Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this massive British fortification sits high atop a volcanic hill. It requires a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views across the Caribbean Sea to Sint Eustatius and Saba are spectacular. It is a genuine highlight for history enthusiasts and photographers alike, well worth the entry fee and the drive.

Marina at Basseterre, St. Kitts, Caribbean

For a more relaxed tour of the landscape, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway is unique in the region. Originally built to transport sugar cane, the double-decker train loops around the coast, offering a comfortable way to see the villages and countryside that are otherwise hard to access. Alternatively, a stop at Romney Manor offers a blend of nature and culture; the botanical gardens feature a magnificent 400-year-old Saman tree and house Caribelle Batik, where you can watch local artisans at work.

If a beach day is your priority, we advise skipping the Atlantic side and heading to the Southeast Peninsula. The drive itself is scenic, crossing the narrow isthmus with views of both oceans. South Friars Bay and Cockleshell Bay offer the best calm waters and soft sands, lined with casual beach bars facing the peak of Nevis.

Basseterre itself is a bustling, authentic Caribbean town rather than a sanitized tourist trap. While Port Zante is filled with standard duty-free shops, a walk into the town center reveals the Circus—modeled after Piccadilly in London—and Independence Square, a poignant reminder of the island's history as a former slave market. We recommend prioritizing the island tour or the peninsula beaches, using the town primarily for a brief historical stroll before returning to the ship.

At Sea - Cruising

Kralendijk (Bonaire), Antilles

Bonaire's identity is inextricably linked to the sea. The entire coastline is a protected national marine park, a pioneering effort in conservation that has preserved one of the Caribbean's most vibrant underwater ecosystems. This makes world-class snorkeling and diving remarkably accessible, often just steps from the shore. The main town, Kralendijk, is a clean, quiet, and walkable port. Oranjestad, Aruba

Aruba presents a unique Caribbean landscape, trading lush jungle for an arid, desert-like beauty of cacti, rock formations, and its iconic, wind-swept divi-divi trees. The cruise port docks directly in the capital, Oranjestad, a clean and walkable city defined by its brightly colored Dutch colonial architecture. A complimentary open-air trolley makes a convenient loop through the main downtown area, which is filled with high-end retailers and local boutiques.

While the city is charming, Aruba’s primary draw is its magnificent coastline. A short taxi or bus ride north of the port reveals two of the Caribbean’s most celebrated beaches. Eagle Beach is a vast expanse of pristine white sand, consistently ranked among the world's best, offering a more tranquil atmosphere. Adjacent Palm Beach is livelier, lined with resorts, beach bars, and a full spectrum of water sports.

For those seeking an alternative to the beach, the island’s interior offers a compelling look at its rugged terrain. A visit to Arikok National Park showcases a dramatic coastline and caves with ancient Arawak petroglyphs. Closer to the port, the Casibari Rock Formations provide an easily accessible opportunity to climb among massive tonalite boulders for panoramic island views. Aruba offers a polished and safe environment, balancing world-class beach relaxation with accessible and distinctive natural scenery.

Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados presents a polished and substantial Caribbean experience, anchored by its capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison offer a genuine sense of place, where British colonial architecture stands alongside vibrant Bajan life. The city core is compact enough to explore, with landmarks like the Parliament Buildings and the Careenage marina providing a backdrop that feels more like a historic town than a simple beach stop.

Beyond the city, the island's offerings are diverse. For a unique natural wonder, Harrison's Cave offers a stunning underground tram tour through crystallized limestone caverns. For a taste of the island's most famous export, a visit to the Mount Gay Rum Distillery provides both a history lesson and a tasting. Of course, the beaches are world-class. Just a short taxi ride from the port, Carlisle Bay is a magnificent crescent of white sand with calm, turquoise water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling over several shipwrecks teeming with marine life. For a more serene scene, the west coast, known as the "Platinum Coast," is lined with idyllic stretches like Paynes Bay and Mullins Beach.

Barbados is not a rugged, off-the-beaten-path destination; it is well-developed and organized. Taxis are plentiful and regulated (though it's always wise to confirm the fare beforehand). This makes it an excellent port for independent exploration, offering a rewarding balance of accessible history, natural beauty, and sophisticated relaxation.

St. John's, Antigua

While the local tourism board famously markets Antigua as having 365 beaches—one for every day of the year—relegating this island to a simple sun-and-sand destination does a disservice to its profound historical significance. For the educated traveler, Antigua offers the Caribbean's most compelling example of British naval heritage combined with vibrant West Indian culture.

The crown jewel here is English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the south coast. Unlike sterile museums, this is the world's only continuously working Georgian dockyard, where 18th-century stone buildings now house bakeries, workshops, and restaurants amidst modern superyachts. We highly recommend the journey to Shirley Heights nearby; the panoramic view over the harbour is perhaps the most photographed vista in the Caribbean and well worth the winding drive.

In the capital of Saint John's, where ships dock, the experience is bifurcated. You will disembark at Heritage Quay, a standard complex of duty-free jewelry and electronics shops found throughout the region. However, a short walk leads to Redcliffe Quay, a preserved district of 19th-century warehouses converted into boutiques and cafes that feels far more authentic. For those interested in the island's agricultural past, the landscape is still dotted with the stone towers of sugar mills, with Betty’s Hope offering a restored look at the plantation era.

If your priority is relaxation, the beaches truly are spectacular. Dickenson Bay offers full amenities and proximity to the port, while Ffryes Beach and Darkwood Beach on the southwest coast offer turquoise waters with a more laid-back atmosphere. Whether you choose naval history or coastal relaxation, Antigua requires leaving the immediate port area to appreciate its genuine stature.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

St. Maarten offers a unique geopolitical curiosity: a 37-square-mile island divided between the Netherlands and France. While the cruise pier in Philipsburg (the Dutch side) is often crowded with multiple mega-ships, the island’s dual personality allows for a highly customizable day if you plan strategically.

Philipsburg itself is the commercial engine. Front Street is lined with duty-free jewelry and electronics stores; while convenient for shoppers, it can feel somewhat manufactured. For a more relaxed immediate option, the boardwalk along Great Bay offers decent beach bars and a view of the ships, though the water clarity here lags behind the rest of the island.

To experience the island's true charm, cross the border to the French side (St. Martin). The atmosphere shifts perceptibly in the capital of Marigot, with its open-air markets and colonial architecture. For the sophisticated traveler, the village of Grand Case is the highlight. Known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean, it features exceptional French-Creole cuisine in open-air "lolos" (local barbecue stands) and high-end bistros alike.

Regarding beaches, you have distinct choices:

Maho Beach offers the famous, adrenaline-fueled spectacle of jumbo jets landing just overhead at Princess Juliana International Airport—it is noisy, crowded, and absolutely unique.
For a classic European beach day, head to Orient Bay on the French side for white sand and upscale beach clubs.

A critical note on logistics: Traffic on St. Maarten can be notoriously heavy, particularly in the late afternoon. If venturing to the French side, allow ample buffer time for the return trip to the Philipsburg cruise terminal.
