Ports of Call
Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a city of two distinct halves, divided by the river and united by history. Hilly, historic Buda gazes across at the grand, bustling boulevards of Pest. Spending time here beforehand sets a relaxed, culturally rich tone for your entire vacation.
Getting from the Airport (BUD)
Upon arrival at Ferenc Liszt International Airport, you have several straightforward options to reach the city center. The 100E express bus is a direct and economical choice, connecting the airport with Deák Ferenc Square in the heart of Pest. For door-to-door service, the official Főtaxi kiosk located just outside the arrivals hall offers regulated fares. Alternatively, pre-booking a private transfer provides the ultimate convenience after a long flight.

A Suggested Two-Day Introduction to Budapest - Day 1: The Imperial Grandeur of Pest
After settling into your hotel, begin your exploration on the Pest side. A walk along the Danube Promenade offers breathtaking views of the Buda Castle complex across the water. Here you will also find the “Shoes on the Danube Bank,” a simple yet profoundly moving memorial to Holocaust victims. From the river, head inland to St. Stephen's Basilica, an impressive neoclassical cathedral. For a nominal fee, you can ascend to the dome’s observation deck for a stunning 360-degree panorama of the city.

From the basilica, stroll down the elegant Andrássy Avenue, Budapest’s answer to the Champs-Élysées, lined with beautiful architecture, luxury boutiques, and embassies. This path leads past the magnificent Hungarian State Opera House, a masterpiece of neo-Renaissance design. For the evening, immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of the historic Jewish Quarter. This area is famous for its unique “ruin bars”—eclectic pubs set up in abandoned buildings—but it also hosts a fantastic culinary scene. The interconnected courtyards of Gozsdu Udvar offer a wide array of excellent restaurants and lively bars, providing a perfect spot for dinner.
Day 2: Historic Buda & a Quintessential Hungarian Experience
Today, cross the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge to the Buda side. You can take the historic funicular or enjoy a brisk walk up the hill to the Castle District, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spend your morning wandering the cobblestone streets and exploring its main attractions. Fisherman’s Bastion, with its fairytale turrets, provides the city’s most iconic photo opportunity, framing the spectacular Hungarian Parliament Building across the river. Nearby is the stunning Matthias Church, with its intricately patterned, colorful tile roof and rich interior.

In the afternoon, indulge in a truly essential Budapest ritual: a visit to a thermal bath. The city sits on a fault line with over 100 thermal springs, and “taking the waters” is a beloved local pastime. The two most famous are the sprawling, palatial Szechenyi Baths in City Park (Pest side) and the elegant, Art Nouveau Gellért Baths (Buda side). Soaking in the naturally heated, mineral-rich waters is the perfect way to unwind and relax before your cruise.
Dining & Shopping
No visit is complete without exploring the Great Market Hall. This vast, three-story market is an architectural gem and a feast for the senses. The ground floor is a vibrant display of fresh produce, cured meats, and local delicacies. Head upstairs for food stalls serving traditional Hungarian fare like goulash and lángos (fried dough with toppings), as well as vendors selling classic souvenirs like paprika, Tokaji wine, and handcrafted goods. For a taste of old-world café culture, visit the opulent Café Gerbeaud or the legendary New York Café, often called the most beautiful café in the world.
Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava's compact scale is its greatest asset for a day visit. Ships dock directly on the Danube, a five-minute walk from the pedestrian-only Old Town (Staré Mesto), making this a port where independent exploration works perfectly.
Start with Bratislava Castle. The walk up the hill is steep but manageable, and the terrace rewards the effort with clear views over the river and the city's red-tiled roofs. Back down in the historic core, St. Martin's Cathedral warrants a stop—look for the gold replica crown on its spire, marking its past as a Hungarian coronation site.
The Old Town centers around Hlavné námestie (Main Square). Walk the winding streets to the Primate's Palace; the Hall of Mirrors inside is a stunning, quiet piece of 18th-century architecture. For a mid-morning break, find a local café for a slice of Bratislavské rožky (traditional crescent pastries filled with poppy seed or walnut). If your afternoon allows, the elevator up the UFO Observation Deck on the SNP Bridge provides a striking visual contrast between the medieval city and the Soviet-era architecture across the river.
Included with your cruise
Day 3: Bratislava
"Coronation City" walking tour
OR Tastes of Slovakia
OR Bratislava Castle hike
Host to the crowning ceremonies of 11 Hungarian kings and queens between 1536 and 1830, Bratislava certainly has earned the title “Coronation City of Kings,” as you’ll discover during your walking tour. Or join a special “Tastes of Slovakia” tour. For a more active adventure, hike up to Bratislava Castle, offering magnificent views of the city.
Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided
Vienna, Austria

Most itineraries offer a half-day excursion to Schönbrunn Palace. The Habsburg summer residence and its expansive gardens require several hours, making a ship-organized tour the most reliable way to secure timed entry and manage the transit. If you prefer staying in the city center, direct your time to the Upper Belvedere to see Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss, or head to the Museumsquartier, where the Leopold Museum houses the world’s largest Egon Schiele collection alongside striking Secessionist art.

Viennese coffee house culture is an essential experience, meant to be savored rather than rushed. Bypass the hour-long queues at Café Central and take a velvet-upholstered booth at Café Sperl or Café Korb. Order a traditional Melange and a slice of Apfelstrudel or Sachertorte in a classic, unhurried setting. For a substantial lunch, seek out Figlmüller for their signature, plate-overlapping Wiener Schnitzel, though reservations are highly recommended.
River ships often stay late or overnight here. Use the evening to attend a classical concert. While the Musikverein is the gold standard for acoustics, the Kursalon offers accessible, high-quality performances of Mozart and Strauss waltzes in the very hall where Johann Strauss II once directed his orchestra. It provides a fitting, memorable close to a day in the music capital.
Included with your cruise
Day 4: Vienna
OR Vienna city tour by bike
Free time
The “City of Waltzes” offers a wealth of gems and your city tour showcases its regal splendors, including the majestic Opera House and the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs. Conclude your tour in Vienna’s historic city center and then visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral, or discover Vienna by bike. During the afternoon, enjoy leisure time to further explore this iconic city.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided
Weissenkirchen, Austria
Linz
For full-day calls, Linz is the primary launch point for excursions into two distinct regions:
- Salzburg: The drive south crosses the Austrian Lake District, often stopping at Mondsee to view the Basilica St. Michael. In Salzburg proper, focus on the baroque architecture of Residenz Square and the terraced Mirabell Gardens.
- Český Krumlov: Heading north across the Czech border brings you to this remarkably preserved medieval town, wrapped in a tight bend of the Vltava River and dominated by its 13th-century castle complex.
- Austrian Lake District: Half-day scenic drives focus purely on the Salzkammergut region, typically stopping in the lakeside village of St. Wolfgang for a walk past its frescoed buildings and gothic pilgrimage church.
Included with your cruise
Day 6: Linz
OR "UNESCO City of Media Arts" walking tour
OR "Cultural Mile" bike tour
Český Krumlov excursion(Not available with full-day Salzburg excursion)
The ship arrives in Linz where you’ll have several choices of excursions. Opt for a full-day excursion to Salzburg where you’ll tour the historic center, Mirabell Gardens, Residenz Square and the Old Market. En route to Salzburg, stop at Mondsee, home of the Basilica St. Michael. Or join a morning walking tour through the old city center of Linz and by the Mozart House; or go on a bike tour of the city’s famed “Cultural Mile” and the Danube. During the afternoon, you can also choose to visit charming Český Krumlov, located just over the Czech-Austrian border.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided
Passau

Stroll through narrow cobblestone lanes flanked by Italianate baroque architecture, a legacy of Italian master builders who rebuilt the city after a 17th-century fire. The undisputed highlight is St. Stephen's Cathedral, a magnificent structure housing the largest cathedral organ in the world. Time your visit to experience one of the brief but powerful daily organ concerts—a truly unforgettable auditory experience. For a breathtaking panoramic view, make the rewarding ascent to Veste Oberhaus, the formidable fortress perched high above the city. From here, the entire peninsula and the meeting of the rivers are laid out before you.
For a more relaxed pace, explore the Höllgasse, an artists' alley filled with small galleries and studios, or simply find a seat at a riverside café to savor a coffee and pastry. Passau’s blend of stunning natural beauty, architectural grandeur, and rich musical heritage offers a day of serene cultural immersion, providing a perfect and accessible escape.
Included with your cruise
Passau, Germany - Vilshofen
Vilshofen
Practical Disembarkation and Transit - The river moorings in Vilshofen sit just steps from the historic center. The local train station, Bahnhof Vilshofen, is a five-minute taxi ride or a manageable walk from the docks. Direct regional trains connect to Munich Central Station (München Hbf) in about two hours, making Munich International Airport the most logical departure point for North American flights. If your post-cruise plans point north to the Czech Republic, private car transfers to Prague take roughly three and a half hours and offer the chance to stop in towns like Český Krumlov along the way.
Day 1 — The Abbey and the Three Rivers - Spend your first morning exploring Vilshofen itself, where the Vils and Wolfach rivers meet the Danube. Walk up the hill to Schweiklberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery whose twin towers dominate the skyline. The abbey houses an unexpected museum of contemporary African art, collected by missionaries, and a shop selling their distinct apple-based Schweiklberger Geist liqueur. Back down in the old town, the colorful facades of the Stadtplatz lead to Gasthof Wolferstetter Bräu. Stop here for a traditional Bavarian lunch; the local wheat beer comes straight from the town's own historic brewery.
In the afternoon, take the quick 20-minute train ride east to Passau. Time your visit to catch the afternoon concert at St. Stephen's Cathedral, home to Europe's largest pipe organ with nearly 18,000 pipes. Afterward, cross the Danube to take the shuttle bus up to Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century fortress offering excellent vantage points over the city's three converging rivers.
Day 2 — The Regensburg Route - If you are routing toward Munich, break the journey halfway in Regensburg. Unlike many German cities, Regensburg's medieval center survived World War II largely intact. Walk across the 12th-century Stone Bridge, a marvel of medieval engineering, and grab a charcoal-grilled bratwurst at the Historische Wurstkuchl. This small tavern has operated near the riverbank for nearly 900 years, originally feeding the stonemasons who built the bridge.
Spend the afternoon exploring the Gothic Regensburg Cathedral, noting the intricate stained glass windows that date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Just a few blocks away, you can touch the Porta Praetoria, the remains of a Roman legionary camp gate built in 179 AD. Continue by train to Munich in the late afternoon, checking into a hotel near the city center for your final two nights.
Day 3 — Munich's Cultural Core - Base your final full day around the Viktualienmarkt in Munich. This sprawling open-air market provides an excellent morning walk among butchers, bakers, and cheese vendors, offering a genuine look at daily Bavarian life. From there, walk to the Munich Residenz, the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs. The Antiquarium hall, lined with Renaissance busts and frescoes, warrants the entry fee alone.
For lunch, bypass the heavily trafficked Hofbräuhaus and walk to Schneider Bräuhaus for their legendary Weisswurst (white sausage) and wheat beer. Dedicate your afternoon to the Alte Pinakothek, which holds one of the world's strongest collections of Old Master paintings, including major works by Dürer, Rubens, and Rembrandt. For a final dinner, Augustiner-Keller offers a classic Bavarian beer garden experience under a canopy of chestnut trees, serving excellent roasted pork knuckle and beer drawn from wooden barrels.
Departure Logistics - Munich Airport sits roughly 40 minutes north of the city center. The S-Bahn commuter trains (S1 or S8 lines) run frequently from Marienplatz and the central station directly to the terminals. Taking a late-morning flight allows time for one last proper German breakfast at your hotel—fresh brötchen, local cheeses, and strong coffee—before the train ride to the runway.
