  2. We’re Queer & We’ve Been Here! Exploring Pre-Colonial Queer History & Adlerian Community Feelings Presented by: Glen Bradley, MA, LGPC, NCC Where do our gender and sexuality norms originate, and how have they evolved over time? How do these norms shape our clients' identities, resilience, and self-support––especially in today’s sociopolitical climate? If these questions excite you, please join me for this presentation! Alfred Adler’s concept of “community feeling” points to the importance of feeling connected to the cosmic human community spanning time throughout both our past and future. This presentation will explore a variety of gender and sexuality cultural norms across the globe in pre-colonial societies, the influence of colonialism on these norms, and explore how oppression of the past influences power and social injustices of the present. We will conclude with actionable clinical strategies to help queer clients cultivate a strong sense of community feeling, empowering them to resist anti-queer propaganda and build community feeling as a source of resilience. Objectives:
    • Learn about the historical context of current gender and sexuality norms.
    • Explore therapeutic approaches to decolonizing gender and sexuality within psychotherapy by cultivating an Adlerian sense of community.
    • Develop strategies to empower queer clients to build resilience and a sense of community feeling.

Understanding the Impact of Political Stress and Suicide Presented by: Angele Moss-Baker, LPC, LMFT, MAC, SAP Political stress can significantly impact mental health, especially during and after elections. For some, this stress can lead to feelings of hopelessness and despair, increasing the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Behavioral health professionals must be able to identify individuals at risk of suicide. Recognizing the warning signs and risk factors associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors allows these practitioners to offer support and appropriate interventions. This session aims to enhance clinical skills to mitigate the negative effects of political stress and reduce the risk of suicide by further exploring polyvagal theory and somatic therapies for managing stress and reducing the risk of suicide. Objectives:
    • Recognize the impact of political stress on mental health.
    • Identify signs of suicide.
    • Examine techniques to facilitate open and respectful dialogue about political issues.
    • Explore somatic therapies and the polyvagal theory for mental and emotional well-being.
  4. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Personality Disorders Presented by: Frances M. Christian, PhD, LCSW Personality disorders involve long-term patterns of impairment affecting cognition, emotion, and interpersonal behavior. Research shows that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can reduce symptoms and help people change their thinking and behavior patterns. This session will explore several techniques for addressing personality disorders, such as using a cognitive conceptualization diagram, Socratic questioning, identifying compensatory strategies, analyzing advantages and disadvantages, and conducting behavioral experiments to test cognition. Objectives:
    • Conceptualize clients with personality disorders using the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model.
    • Evaluate a CBT case formulation for understanding and involving clients in treatment.
    • Examine two strategies and interventions aimed at modifying schemas and reducing unhelpful coping mechanisms.
  5. Recognizing the Impact of Childhood Trauma, Implicit Biases, and Societal Norms on the Supervisor/Supervisee Relationship Presented by: Miranda Y. Pearson, PhD, LCMHCS, NCC, BCC, CSOTP, MAC, BC-TMH Adequate supervision is more than just a professional obligation; it is a dynamic relationship shaped by personal experiences, societal influences, and unconscious biases. This engaging two-hour workshop explores how childhood trauma, implicit biases, and societal norms impact the supervisor/supervisee dynamic. Participants will examine how these factors shape perceptions, interactions, and decision-making within supervision to enhance cultural humility and improve supervisory effectiveness. Objectives:

Motivational Interviewing and Trauma-Informed Care for Healthcare Practitioners Presented by: Darryl Moch, MEd This interactive training is designed for practitioners in health and human service-related fields seeking to enhance their clinical skills by integrating Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques within a Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) framework. Through discussion and role-play participants will weave trauma-informed principles into MI strategies and identify adaptive treatment approaches to meet the unique needs of clients with trauma histories. Join us in this enriching experience to transform your practice and promote healing through understanding and compassion! Objectives:
    • Correlate trauma types and their impact on behavior, emotional regulation, and motivation.

She is also the owner of Word Counseling and Consulting, where she offers expert therapeutic services, and a Treatment Practitioner at Prince William County Community Services Board, providing comprehensive mental health support. Melinda is a retired U.S. Air Force Major with 22 years of service. She is actively involved in her community as a Board Member at Resurrection Church, where she also leads the Children’s Ministry. She holds an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Marymount University, an MBA in Human Resources Management from Trident University, and a BS in Management Studies from the University of Maryland Global Campus. Frances M. Christian, Ph.D., LCSW, provides psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families as a private practitioner. She is a former full-time Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry faculty member who served as Director of Clinical Social Work and Co-Director of the Anxiety Disorders Specialty Clinic. She remains affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry as an external Clinical Professor supervising VCU psychiatry residents in providing psychotherapy services. She is a seasoned cognitive-behavioral therapist specializing in working with trauma survivors. She is past Chairman of the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Social Work and an active member of several professional organizations, including the Association of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (ABCT), The National Association of Social Workers (NASW,) and the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW), International OCD Foundation and the International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD), In 2013 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Social Workers, Virginia Chapter recognizing her as "someone who has been recognized beyond the social work profession”.

While many travelers treat Port Canaveral merely as a functional transit point, anchoring your cruise with a two- or three-day stay in Central Florida transforms a simple Caribbean loop into a diverse journey. Extending your trip allows you to combine the engineering marvels of the Space Coast with the surprisingly sophisticated cultural and culinary landscape of Orlando and Winter Park. Arriving early also provides a vital buffer against flight delays, ensuring you board your ship relaxed and ready to vacation.

Practical Arrival and Logistics - The drive between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Port Canaveral takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes via SR-528 (The Beachline Expressway). We strongly recommend a rental car if you plan to explore Winter Park or the Kennedy Space Center, as it offers the freedom to move between districts without relying on surging ride-share prices. Traffic in the greater Orlando area, particularly on I-4, is notoriously heavy; always pad your travel times by 30 minutes. For accommodations, consider splitting your stay: book your first night in the upscale enclave of Winter Park or the modern Lake Nona area, and your final pre-cruise night closer to the port in Cocoa Beach or Cape Canaveral.

Day 1 — Winter Park and Culinary Exploration - Skip the neon lights of International Drive and head 50 minutes west of the port to Winter Park. This historic, affluent enclave offers a European-style pacing that provides a stark contrast to the region's theme parks. Center your afternoon on Park Avenue, a cobblestone thoroughfare lined with independent boutiques and canopy oaks. Visit the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including his stunning chapel interior from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Afterward, take the Scenic Boat Tour for an hour-long cruise through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, navigating narrow, hand-dug canals past historic estates.

Embarkation Day — Nature and Waterfront Dining - Before heading to your cruise terminal, spend a quiet morning at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. While the immediate port areas are modern, the true value lies in the region's natural topography and colonial history.

The undisputed highlight for active travelers is the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua. This is not a passive sightseeing tour; it is a physical excursion involving hiking, sliding down natural chutes, and jumping into limestone pools. It is exhilarating, but we advise clients to assess their physical comfort level honestly before booking—it requires agility and stamina.

For a panoramic perspective with less exertion, the Teleférico (cable car) ascends Mount Isabel de Torres. At the summit, you will find botanical gardens and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. Cloud cover can obscure the view by afternoon, so we recommend prioritizing this early in the day.

Closer to sea level, the historic town center features charming Victorian "gingerbread" architecture surrounding the Plaza Independencia. A visit to the Amber Museum provides context to the region's namesake export, while the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe offers a tangible connection to the island's colonial defense. Puerto Plata is not a polished metropolis, but for those willing to explore, it delivers a genuine and engaging Caribbean experience.

Unlike ports requiring long transfers to see anything of value, Old San Juan greets you immediately upon disembarkation. This 500-year-old walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored independently on foot, allowing you to bypass crowded bus tours and move at your own pace.

Your priority should be the two massive citadels guarding the coast. Start at Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fortification in the New World, before walking the scenic coastal trail to the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The sheer scale of these defenses is humbling, and the expansive green lawn leading to El Morro—often dotted with kites—provides a dramatic contrast to the deep blue Atlantic.

Between the forts lies a grid of blue cobblestone streets (adoquines) lined with vibrant colonial architecture. For a cultural pause, visit the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the resting place of Ponce de León.

Culinary exploration is essential. Skip the generic tourist traps near the pier and head deeper into the city. Seek out mofongo (garlicky mashed plantains) at a local staple like El Jibarito or Café Puerto Rico. While the nearby beaches of Condado are beautiful, they require a taxi and contend with traffic. Unless you have visited before, we advise dedicating your day entirely to the history and atmosphere within the city walls, finishing perhaps with a Piña Colada at Barrachina, right in the heart of the old town.

St. Kitts stands out in the Caribbean for its dramatic topography and deep colonial history, offering a richer experience than the standard beach-only destination. The island is dominated by dormant volcanoes and lush rainforests, providing a backdrop that feels wilder and more rugged than many of its neighbors.

The premier attraction is undoubtedly Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this massive British fortification sits high atop a volcanic hill. It requires a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views across the Caribbean Sea to Sint Eustatius and Saba are spectacular. It is a genuine highlight for history enthusiasts and photographers alike, well worth the entry fee and the drive.

For a more relaxed tour of the landscape, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway is unique in the region. Originally built to transport sugar cane, the double-decker train loops around the coast, offering a comfortable way to see the villages and countryside that are otherwise hard to access. Alternatively, a stop at Romney Manor offers a blend of nature and culture; the botanical gardens feature a magnificent 400-year-old Saman tree and house Caribelle Batik, where you can watch local artisans at work.

If a beach day is your priority, we advise skipping the Atlantic side and heading to the Southeast Peninsula. The drive itself is scenic, crossing the narrow isthmus with views of both oceans. South Friars Bay and Cockleshell Bay offer the best calm waters and soft sands, lined with casual beach bars facing the peak of Nevis.

Basseterre itself is a bustling, authentic Caribbean town rather than a sanitized tourist trap. While Port Zante is filled with standard duty-free shops, a walk into the town center reveals the Circus—modeled after Piccadilly in London—and Independence Square, a poignant reminder of the island's history as a former slave market. We recommend prioritizing the island tour or the peninsula beaches, using the town primarily for a brief historical stroll before returning to the ship.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:
