    Every pediatric dental examination is a new patient examination because of the dynamics of growth and development. There is much to see in the mouths of children other than caries and loose teeth. This program covers aspects of the pediatric dental examination including recognition of anomalies, growth and development, symmetry and balance of the dentition and other components that make examinations on children unique. Clinical and radiographic photographs illustrate the areas of discussion.

  • 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM – The Latest in Pediatric Dentistry

    So, what's new in the world of pediatric dentistry? Indications for and treatment of pulpotomies and non-vital primary teeth have changed, the variety of full coverage crowns has exploded, faster and painless anesthesia is now a real possibility, minimally invasive treatment is more popular, and more emphasis is now being placed on obstructive sleep apnea, its etiology and how to treat it effectively. These topics will bring dentists more fully informed about developments in pediatric dentistry.

    Pediatric dentistry requires dentists to successfully communicate with and manage the behavior of both children and parents. They must also manage their own behavior as well. Techniques are discussed and shown in videos of patients in treatment. Dental training focuses on technical aspects, but for children excellent care is only possible with proper handling of patients. Parents are often the entertainment and not the “problem” that most believe.

While many travelers treat Port Canaveral merely as a functional transit point, anchoring your cruise with a two- or three-day stay in Central Florida transforms a simple Caribbean loop into a diverse journey. Extending your trip allows you to combine the engineering marvels of the Space Coast with the surprisingly sophisticated cultural and culinary landscape of Orlando and Winter Park. Arriving early also provides a vital buffer against flight delays, ensuring you board your ship relaxed and ready to vacation.

Practical Arrival and Logistics - The drive between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Port Canaveral takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes via SR-528 (The Beachline Expressway). We strongly recommend a rental car if you plan to explore Winter Park or the Kennedy Space Center, as it offers the freedom to move between districts without relying on surging ride-share prices. Traffic in the greater Orlando area, particularly on I-4, is notoriously heavy; always pad your travel times by 30 minutes. For accommodations, consider splitting your stay: book your first night in the upscale enclave of Winter Park or the modern Lake Nona area, and your final pre-cruise night closer to the port in Cocoa Beach or Cape Canaveral.

Day 1 — Winter Park and Culinary Exploration - Skip the neon lights of International Drive and head 50 minutes west of the port to Winter Park. This historic, affluent enclave offers a European-style pacing that provides a stark contrast to the region's theme parks. Center your afternoon on Park Avenue, a cobblestone thoroughfare lined with independent boutiques and canopy oaks. Visit the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including his stunning chapel interior from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Afterward, take the Scenic Boat Tour for an hour-long cruise through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, navigating narrow, hand-dug canals past historic estates.

Winter Park is also the epicenter of Central Florida's Michelin-recognized culinary scene. Dine at Prato for modern Italian cuisine, or The Ravenous Pig, a gastropub that pioneered the local farm-to-table movement. The Alfond Inn makes an excellent base for the night, featuring a contemporary art collection from Rollins College that rivals many dedicated galleries.

Day 2 — Kennedy Space Center and Coastal Decompression - Drive east to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. This is an active launch facility and a living museum of aerospace history, not a typical theme park. Arrive at opening (9:00 AM) and allocate a full, unhurried day. Begin with the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit; the theatrical reveal of the orbiter is genuinely moving. Walk beneath the massive Saturn V rocket in the Apollo/Saturn V Center to grasp the sheer scale of the F-1 engines. We also recommend Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex, focusing on commercial spaceflight. If your schedule aligns, viewing a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from the Banana Creek viewing area is an unforgettable auditory and visual experience.

In the late afternoon, drive to Cocoa Beach. While the town can be touristy, the historic Cocoa Beach Pier and the iconic Ron Jon Surf Shop are landmarks worth a quick visit to experience authentic Florida surf culture.

Alternative Day 2 — Navigating the Theme Parks - If you prefer to visit the major theme parks, take a targeted approach focused on design and immersion rather than ride counts. Epcot is generally the most adult-friendly park, particularly during its rotating festivals (Food & Wine, Flower & Garden). The World Showcase offers a pleasant culinary tour, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a marvel of ride engineering. For environmental storytelling, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal's Islands of Adventure are masterclasses in immersive design that can be appreciated on a purely artistic level, regardless of your fandom.

Embarkation Day — Nature and Waterfront Dining - Before heading to your cruise terminal, spend a quiet morning at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. A drive along Black Point Wildlife Drive often yields sightings of alligators, roseate spoonbills, and manatees.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan offers one of the most sophisticated and accessible experiences in the Caribbean. Unlike ports requiring long transfers to see anything of value, Old San Juan greets you immediately upon disembarkation. This 500-year-old walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored independently on foot, allowing you to bypass crowded bus tours and move at your own pace.

Your priority should be the two massive citadels guarding the coast. Start at Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fortification in the New World, before walking the scenic coastal trail to the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The sheer scale of these defenses is humbling, and the expansive green lawn leading to El Morro—often dotted with kites—provides a dramatic contrast to the deep blue Atlantic.

Between the forts lies a grid of blue cobblestone streets (adoquines) lined with vibrant colonial architecture. The joy here is aimless wandering, though the heat can be intense; stay hydrated and wear sturdy walking shoes to navigate the hills. For a cultural pause, visit the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the resting place of Ponce de León.

Culinary exploration is essential. Skip the generic tourist traps near the pier and head deeper into the city. Seek out mofongo (garlicky mashed plantains) at a local staple like El Jibarito or Café Puerto Rico. While the nearby beaches of Condado are beautiful, they require a taxi and contend with traffic. Unless you have visited before, we advise dedicating your day entirely to the history and atmosphere within the city walls, finishing perhaps with a Piña Colada at Barrachina, right in the heart of the old town.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

St. Maarten offers a unique geopolitical curiosity: a 37-square-mile island divided between the Netherlands and France. While the cruise pier in Philipsburg (the Dutch side) is often crowded with multiple mega-ships, the island’s dual personality allows for a highly customizable day if you plan strategically.

Philipsburg itself is the commercial engine. Front Street is lined with duty-free jewelry and electronics stores; while convenient for shoppers, it can feel somewhat manufactured. For a more relaxed immediate option, the boardwalk along Great Bay offers decent beach bars and a view of the ships, though the water clarity here lags behind the rest of the island.

To experience the island's true charm, cross the border to the French side (St. Martin). The atmosphere shifts perceptibly in the capital of Marigot, with its open-air markets and colonial architecture. For the sophisticated traveler, the village of Grand Case is the highlight. Known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean, it features exceptional French-Creole cuisine in open-air "lolos" (local barbecue stands) and high-end bistros alike.

Regarding beaches, you have distinct choices:
  • Maho Beach offers the famous, adrenaline-fueled spectacle of jumbo jets landing just overhead at Princess Juliana International Airport—it is noisy, crowded, and absolutely unique.
  • For a classic European beach day, head to Orient Bay on the French side for white sand and upscale beach clubs.
A critical note on logistics: Traffic on St. Maarten can be notoriously heavy, particularly in the late afternoon. If venturing to the French side, allow ample buffer time for the return trip to the Philipsburg cruise terminal.
