Ports of Call

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest, Hungary
Arriving in Budapest on the day your cruise departs is to treat one of Europe’s grandest capitals as a mere footnote. We strongly recommend arriving at least one or two days early. This not only provides a crucial buffer against flight delays but allows you to acclimate to the time zone and immerse yourself in the magnificent “Pearl of the Danube” before your river journey even begins.
Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a city of two distinct halves, divided by the river and united by history. Hilly, historic Buda gazes across at the grand, bustling boulevards of Pest. Spending time here beforehand sets a relaxed, culturally rich tone for your entire vacation.

Getting from the Airport (BUD)
Upon arrival at Ferenc Liszt International Airport, you have several straightforward options to reach the city center. The 100E express bus is a direct and economical choice, connecting the airport with Deák Ferenc Square in the heart of Pest. For door-to-door service, the official Főtaxi kiosk located just outside the arrivals hall offers regulated fares. Alternatively, pre-booking a private transfer provides the ultimate convenience after a long flight.
Budapest, Hungary

A Suggested Two-Day Introduction to Budapest - Day 1: The Imperial Grandeur of Pest
After settling into your hotel, begin your exploration on the Pest side. A walk along the Danube Promenade offers breathtaking views of the Buda Castle complex across the water. Here you will also find the “Shoes on the Danube Bank,” a simple yet profoundly moving memorial to Holocaust victims. From the river, head inland to St. Stephen's Basilica, an impressive neoclassical cathedral. For a nominal fee, you can ascend to the dome’s observation deck for a stunning 360-degree panorama of the city.
Budapest, Hungary

From the basilica, stroll down the elegant Andrássy Avenue, Budapest’s answer to the Champs-Élysées, lined with beautiful architecture, luxury boutiques, and embassies. This path leads past the magnificent Hungarian State Opera House, a masterpiece of neo-Renaissance design. For the evening, immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of the historic Jewish Quarter. This area is famous for its unique “ruin bars”—eclectic pubs set up in abandoned buildings—but it also hosts a fantastic culinary scene. The interconnected courtyards of Gozsdu Udvar offer a wide array of excellent restaurants and lively bars, providing a perfect spot for dinner.

Day 2: Historic Buda & a Quintessential Hungarian Experience
Today, cross the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge to the Buda side. You can take the historic funicular or enjoy a brisk walk up the hill to the Castle District, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spend your morning wandering the cobblestone streets and exploring its main attractions. Fisherman’s Bastion, with its fairytale turrets, provides the city’s most iconic photo opportunity, framing the spectacular Hungarian Parliament Building across the river. Nearby is the stunning Matthias Church, with its intricately patterned, colorful tile roof and rich interior.
Budapest, Hungary

In the afternoon, indulge in a truly essential Budapest ritual: a visit to a thermal bath. The city sits on a fault line with over 100 thermal springs, and “taking the waters” is a beloved local pastime. The two most famous are the sprawling, palatial Szechenyi Baths in City Park (Pest side) and the elegant, Art Nouveau Gellért Baths (Buda side). Soaking in the naturally heated, mineral-rich waters is the perfect way to unwind and relax before your cruise.

Dining & Shopping
No visit is complete without exploring the Great Market Hall. This vast, three-story market is an architectural gem and a feast for the senses. The ground floor is a vibrant display of fresh produce, cured meats, and local delicacies. Head upstairs for food stalls serving traditional Hungarian fare like goulash and lángos (fried dough with toppings), as well as vendors selling classic souvenirs like paprika, Tokaji wine, and handcrafted goods. For a taste of old-world café culture, visit the opulent Café Gerbeaud or the legendary New York Café, often called the most beautiful café in the world.

Passau

Passau, Germany
Passau is a town in Lower Bavaria, Germany, known as the Dreiflüssestadt or "City of Three Rivers," where the Danube is joined by the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the north. This unique geography creates a stunning natural spectacle at the confluence (Dreiflüsseeck), where you can observe the distinct colors of the three rivers merging. Your day in this enchanting city is one of effortless discovery, as the compact, walkable Old Town (Altstadt) unfolds directly from the riverbank.

Stroll through narrow cobblestone lanes flanked by Italianate baroque architecture, a legacy of Italian master builders who rebuilt the city after a 17th-century fire. The undisputed highlight is St. Stephen's Cathedral, a magnificent structure housing the largest cathedral organ in the world. Time your visit to experience one of the brief but powerful daily organ concerts—a truly unforgettable auditory experience. For a breathtaking panoramic view, make the rewarding ascent to Veste Oberhaus, the formidable fortress perched high above the city. From here, the entire peninsula and the meeting of the rivers are laid out before you.

For a more relaxed pace, explore the Höllgasse, an artists' alley filled with small galleries and studios, or simply find a seat at a riverside café to savor a coffee and pastry. Passau’s blend of stunning natural beauty, architectural grandeur, and rich musical heritage offers a day of serene cultural immersion, providing a perfect and accessible escape.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.
