Ports of Call

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Too often treated merely as a logistical waypoint between the airport and the gangway, Fort Lauderdale is a destination that quietly rewards those who choose to linger. To view it solely as a departure lounge is to miss the essence of a city that has gracefully matured from a rowdy spring break capital into a sophisticated, nautical metropolis. While it lacks the frenetic, high-voltage energy of Miami to the south, that is precisely its appeal. Fort Lauderdale offers a refined, accessible coastal experience defined by 165 miles of navigable waterways, earning it the moniker “The Venice of America.”

For the educated traveler, this city offers a compelling argument for extending your vacation by 24 to 48 hours. The infrastructure here is built around the water, not just as a backdrop, but as a thoroughfare. The most authentic way to understand the city’s layout and soul is not by car, but from the deck of the Water Taxi. While we generally advise against tourist-heavy transport, this is the exception. It serves as a floating, hop-on-hop-off architecture tour that glides along the Intracoastal Waterway. From this vantage point, the city unfolds: stunning mid-century modern waterfront mansions, sleek mega-yachts, and lush mangrove-lined shores. It connects the key districts—from the historic riverfront to the beach—allowing you to explore without the stress of traffic or parking.

The Cultural and Social Hubs - At the center of the city’s social life is Las Olas Boulevard. This beautifully landscaped thoroughfare stretches from the central business district to the ocean, lined with independent boutiques, art galleries, and a diverse array of restaurants. It is eminently walkable and polished without being pretentious. Here, you can browse contemporary art or fine jewelry before settling into a bustling Italian trattoria or a quiet table at a modern American bistro. For those interested in history, the nearby Stranahan House—the oldest surviving structure in Broward County—offers a glimpse into the frontier trading post days of the early 1900s.

Beyond the shopping and dining, Fort Lauderdale offers accessible cultural experiences that provide a deeper sense of place. The Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is a standout. This historic 35-acre estate, once the winter retreat of artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett, feels like a secret garden frozen in time, surrounded by modern development. You can tour the whimsical home, filled with the couple’s art, and wander through lush grounds that include a desert garden and native barrier island habitat. It is a tranquil escape that reveals the charm of Old Florida.

For art enthusiasts, the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale features a notable collection of American and European modern art, with particular strength in Latin American works and the largest collection of pieces by American impressionist William Glackens. It is a manageable museum, perfect for a few hours of quiet contemplation.

The Coast - Then, of course, there is the beach. Fort Lauderdale Beach is a magnificent stretch of pale sand and turquoise water, framed by a signature white wave wall. Unlike the crowded, party-centric beaches found elsewhere in South Florida, the atmosphere here is more relaxed and grown-up. The beachfront promenade is ideal for a morning walk or bike ride, and the beach itself is wide enough to ensure personal space. It attracts professionals and families seeking sun and serenity rather than spectacle.

An Unhurried Pre-Cruise Itinerary - Arriving a couple of days early transforms the start of your vacation from a stressful travel day into a seamless extension of your holiday. This pace allows for discovery without exhaustion.

Day 1: Arrival & Waterway Immersion
  • Afternoon: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is conveniently located just minutes from the city center and port. After checking into your hotel, head immediately for a waterfront lunch. We recommend finding a spot along the Intracoastal where you can watch the boat traffic—restaurants like Coconuts or 15th Street Fisheries offer fresh seafood and a quintessential nautical vibe.
  • Late Afternoon: Purchase an all-day pass for the Water Taxi. Don’t worry about a specific destination just yet; simply ride the main loop. It is the perfect orientation, allowing you to appreciate the city’s unique geography and stunning architecture from the water as the sun begins to lower.
  • Evening: Disembark at the Las Olas Boulevard stop. Enjoy a leisurely stroll, browse the shops, and select a restaurant for dinner. The boulevard is beautifully lit at night, creating a festive yet sophisticated atmosphere.
Day 2: Culture, Coast & Relaxation
  • Morning: Take a short ride to the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. We recommend arriving close to opening time to beat the heat and the crowds. Allow at least two hours to explore the house and the sprawling grounds. It is a peaceful and utterly unique Florida experience.
  • Lunch: Head toward the beach and find a casual café along A1A for a light lunch with an ocean breeze.
  • Afternoon: Dedicate the afternoon to the beach. Whether you choose to walk the promenade, rent a lounge chair, or take a dip in the Atlantic, this is your time to unwind completely. If you prefer to stay out of the sun, the NSU Art Museum is an excellent, climate-controlled alternative.
  • Evening: For your final dinner, consider a "Dock and Dine" experience. Many of the city's best restaurants are accessible by boat or overlook the canals. Enjoying fresh stone crab or local snapper while watching the yachts glide by is the definitive Fort Lauderdale dining experience.
Embarkation Day

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast. With Port Everglades located just a few miles from most downtown and beach hotels, there is absolutely no need to rush. A short, stress-free transfer to the port will have you boarding your ship feeling refreshed, acclimated, and already steeped in the vacation mindset.

At Sea - Cruising

Roatan, Honduras

Roatan's primary draw is its immediate access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which hugs the shoreline. You don't need a long boat ride to see marine life here; world-class snorkeling often requires nothing more than wading in from the beach. For divers and snorkelers, this is arguably the premier stop in the Western Caribbean, offering high-visibility access to vibrant coral gardens.

Beyond the reef, the island offers two distinct experiences. West Bay is the quintessential Caribbean postcard—powder-white sands and calm turquoise waters—though expect significant crowds at the resorts. For a more authentic atmosphere, head to the neighboring West End village. It offers a bohemian mix of dive shops, open-air bars, and artisan stalls. Grab a fresh baleada, the thick flour tortilla staple of Honduran street food, while walking the strip.

Inland, the most popular excursions involve the island’s wildlife sanctuaries. Interactions with capuchin monkeys and sloths at places like Gumbalimba Park or Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hang Out have become signature experiences, offering genuine engagement for animal lovers.

Ships dock at either the town of Coxen Hole or the purpose-built Mahogany Bay. Arrange transport away from these immediate port areas to experience the island’s true merit. Roatan is not a hub for colonial history or high culture; it is a natural playground. If you prioritize marine exploration or relaxed beach time over shopping and sightseeing, this port delivers.

Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico

Puerto Costa Maya is best understood as a modern, purpose-built gateway to the Yucatán's less-traveled southern coast. The port itself is a self-contained village with pools, shops, and restaurants designed for cruise visitors. For a more authentic experience, a short taxi ride leads to the adjacent fishing village of Mahahual, where a beachfront boardwalk (malecón) is lined with casual restaurants and beach clubs offering a relaxed, local atmosphere.

The true distinction of this port lies in its access to significant, yet uncrowded, Maya archaeological sites. The most popular excursion is to the Chacchoben ruins, where partially excavated pyramids emerge from a dense jungle setting, offering a powerful sense of discovery. For those willing to venture further, the Kohunlich ruins reward the journey with the impressive Temple of the Masks. Another premier excursion is the Laguna de Bacalar, the "Lagoon of Seven Colors," whose stunning freshwater hues are a remarkable natural wonder. While Costa Maya lacks the organic history of an ancient city, it serves as an excellent and comfortable launchpad for a day of genuine historical exploration or serene natural beauty.

CocoCay, Bahamas

A family relaxes in a private beach cabana at CocoCay. The view from the shaded, lushly landscaped wooden structure looks out over white sands and the turquoise Caribbean Sea under a bright sun.
CocoCay, geographically known as Little Stirrup Cay, is a private destination in the Berry Islands designed exclusively for cruise guests. While it lacks the historical depth or authentic local village culture of a standard Bahamian port, it excels as a highly engineered environment for recreation and convenience. The island is effectively divided into two distinct energies: high-adrenaline activity and beachside relaxation.

For families and active travelers, the developed 'Thrill' areas feature a massive waterpark with some of the region's tallest slides and a large wave pool. Conversely, those seeking a quiet beach day can utilize Chill Island or the Oasis Lagoon, an expansive freshwater pool with a swim-up bar. For a more elevated, less crowded experience, the Coco Beach Club offers overwater cabanas and a dedicated restaurant, providing a sanctuary away from the higher-energy general areas. It is important to note that while general beach access and food are included, many specific attractions—including the waterpark and beach club—require significant paid admission. Treat this stop not as a cultural exploration, but as a seamless, high-quality resort day.
Aerial view of the exclusive Coco Beach Club at Perfect Day at CocoCay. Overwater cabanas, a sparkling infinity pool, and a private beach offer a high-luxury Mediterranean-style retreat for cruise passengers in the Bahamas. A group of cruise passengers playing a spirited game of beach volleyball on the white sands of CocoCay. Palm trees and colorful beach umbrellas frame this high-energy activity at Royal Caribbean's private island destination. A family of four snorkeling together in the clear turquoise waters of CocoCay, Bahamas. Schools of tropical fish swim alongside them in this immersive, reef-focused shore excursion perfect for all ages.

Why Protect your Trip?

Whether you’re planning your next trip or you recently booked one, travel insurance can help smooth over many unexpected travel glitches—while putting your mind at ease, knowing you’re off the hook for covered expenses that could arise from them.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can provide you benefits and professional support when a covered situation comes up before or during your trip. The following examples may qualify for benefits:

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen
  • Missing your cruise departure after a covered flight delay

You also can contact our travel protection partner Allianz Global Assistance’s 24/7, award-winning customer service for on-the-go assistance with issues like a medical emergency, replacing your lost passport, or making reservations around the world. To be eligible for a time-sensitive waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusions, purchase your travel insurance plan within 14 days of initial trip deposit (other purchase requirements and conditions apply). Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.

24-HOUR ASSISTANCE

Provides around-the-clock support during your trip. Allianz Global Assistance’s staff of multilingual problem solvers can help you with medical, legal, and travel-related emergencies whenever they happen. Medical assistance may include, but is not limited to:

  • Medical triage with referrals to local prescreened medical providers
  • Ongoing medical monitoring
  • Payment guarantee

Additional services for travel-related emergencies can help with:
