Ports of Call

Cape Liberty, NJ (New York, NY)

Your cruise vacation begins not when you step onto the ship, but when you allow yourself to decompress and immerse in the destination of your departure. While your port is technically Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, its true identity is as the gateway to the boundless energy and cultural richness of New York City. We strongly encourage you to view your embarkation not as a logistical task, but as the first chapter of your well-deserved vacation by arriving one or two days early. This strategic buffer protects you from travel delays and, more importantly, allows you to transition from the routines of daily life to a state of discovery and relaxation.

Getting Your Bearings: From Airport to City - Your journey will likely begin at one of three major airports: Newark Liberty International (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA), or John F. Kennedy International (JFK). For convenience to both Manhattan and the eventual trip to the cruise port, Newark (EWR) is the clear winner. From any airport, ride-sharing services, taxis, and pre-booked car services are readily available to transport you to your Manhattan hotel. Consider accommodations in Midtown for proximity to theaters and landmarks, or opt for the West Village or SoHo for a more neighborhood-centric, boutique experience.

A Suggested 48-Hour Pre-Cruise Itinerary - This mini-itinerary is designed for enrichment and enjoyment, allowing you to engage with the city's culture without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Arrival, Art, and the Stage
  • Afternoon Arrival & Decompression: After checking into your hotel, take a restorative walk through the verdant expanse of Central Park. Meander along the pathways to Bethesda Terrace to admire the architecture and acoustics, or find a quiet bench near The Lake. It’s the perfect antidote to a long flight and a gentle re-entry into the urban rhythm.
  • Late Afternoon Cultural Immersion: Dedicate a few hours to one of the world’s great museums. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) offers a stunning collection from Van Gogh’s "The Starry Night" to Warhol’s "Campbell's Soup Cans," providing a fascinating study in form and innovation. Alternatively, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) is a universe unto itself. You could spend days here, so choose a wing that piques your interest—perhaps the serene Egyptian Temple of Dendur or the impressive collection of European Masters. This is an opportunity to engage the analytical part of your mind in a purely aesthetic pursuit.
  • Evening: Broadway and Beyond: An evening in New York is incomplete without experiencing the magic of Broadway. Book your tickets well in advance for a world-class play or musical. Before the show, enjoy dinner in the Theater District, where classic establishments offer pre-theater menus. For a more modern culinary scene, venture a few blocks west to Hell’s Kitchen, known for its incredible diversity of high-quality, chef-driven restaurants serving everything from authentic Thai to inventive American cuisine.
Day 2: Neighborhoods, Vistas, and Culinary Exploration
  • Morning: A Different Point of View: Start your day by seeing the city from above. While the Empire State Building is iconic, the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center offers arguably better, unobstructed 360-degree views that *include* the Empire State Building itself. The timed-entry tickets help manage crowds, making for a more pleasant experience.
  • Midday: Downtown Discovery: Head downtown to explore a different side of Manhattan. Walk the cobblestone streets of Greenwich Village, absorbing the bohemian history and browsing the unique shops. For lunch, experience a New York institution: a classic deli. Or, for a more varied option, make your way to Chelsea Market, a vibrant food hall where you can sample everything from fresh oysters and lobster to artisanal tacos and gourmet doughnuts.
  • Afternoon: History and Reflection: A visit to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is a profound and moving experience. The outdoor memorial, with its twin reflecting pools, is a powerful tribute to the lives lost. The museum itself offers a comprehensive and sensitively curated account of the day's events and their global impact. It is a somber but essential part of the modern New York story.
  • Evening: A Toast to Your Vacation: For your final evening, treat yourself to a memorable dining experience. Consider a restaurant in a culinary hotspot like the West Village or TriBeCa. Before dinner, find a rooftop bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. Sipping a perfectly crafted drink while gazing at the glittering skyline is the perfect way to toast the beginning of your journey and the fellow travelers you’ll soon meet.
Embarkation Day: The Seamless Transition

On the morning of your cruise, enjoy a leisurely breakfast. There’s no need to rush. When you’re ready, a pre-booked car service or ride-share will take you from your Manhattan hotel, through the Holland Tunnel, and directly to the Cape Liberty terminal in Bayonne, NJ. The journey typically takes 30-60 minutes, depending on traffic. You will arrive relaxed, refreshed, and already in a vacation mindset, ready to board your ship and begin your voyage.

At Sea - Cruising

Ponta Delgada, Azores

Malaga, Spain

Malaga, Spain
Often presented as a gateway to the Costa del Sol, Malaga is a destination that stands firmly on its own considerable merits. This is the birthplace of Picasso, and the city honors its most famous son with the exceptional Museo Picasso, housing a significant collection of his works within a beautifully restored palace. The city’s appeal lies in its rich, visible layers of history. At the foot of the formidable Moorish Alcazaba—a wonderfully preserved fortress-palace that offers a more intimate alternative to Granada's Alhambra—lies a remarkably intact Roman Theatre. This juxtaposition of two great empires is a powerful sight and a testament to Malaga’s deep past.
Malaga, Spain

Beyond these headline sites, the city itself is the main attraction. The historic center is a delightful labyrinth of marble-paved lanes, leading to grand plazas and the impressive, yet famously unfinished, Malaga Cathedral, affectionately nicknamed 'La Manquita' (The One-Armed Lady). For a taste of authentic local life, the Atarazanas Market is a feast for the senses, set within a stunning 19th-century iron building with an original Moorish gate. The redeveloped port area, Muelle Uno, offers a contemporary contrast with its modern promenade, shops, and the colorful cube of the Centre Pompidou Malaga. Malaga is eminently walkable, allowing for a day of genuine discovery that effortlessly blends world-class art, ancient history, and the vibrant, sun-drenched energy of a modern Andalusian city.
Malaga, Spain Malaga, Spain Malaga, Spain Malaga, Spain Malaga, Spain Malaga, Spain Malaga, Spain A family on a guided mountain bike tour through the scenic hills of Montes de Málaga. Vibrant yellow wildflowers frame the trail as they enjoy an active shore excursion with panoramic views of the Mediterranean landscape near the cruise port.

Cartagena, Spain

Cartagena is a genuine historical treasure, made all the more rewarding by its remarkable accessibility. The cruise terminal places you directly at the edge of a city where 3,000 years of history are layered within a short, pleasant walk. This is not a port that requires complex logistics; its greatest rewards are discovered on foot.

The undeniable highlight is the magnificent Roman Theatre, unearthed by chance in 1988 and now beautifully restored. The adjoining museum provides a superb introduction before you emerge into the stunning ancient structure itself. Just a few blocks away, the Roman Forum District reveals the daily life of 'Carthago Nova' with its thermal baths and colonnaded streets. For an even deeper historical perspective, the Punic Wall Interpretation Center showcases one of the few remaining Carthaginian defensive walls in Spain.

Beyond the ancient ruins, Cartagena offers a distinctly Spanish charm. Stroll down the Calle Mayor, a wide marble esplanade lined with elegant Art Nouveau buildings, stopping for tapas or a coffee. The waterfront promenade is a perfect place to appreciate the city’s deep-rooted naval heritage. For the best perspective, take the panoramic lift up to Concepción Castle, which offers sweeping views of the natural harbor and the Roman Theatre below. Cartagena delivers a rich, manageable, and thoroughly enjoyable day of cultural immersion without the overwhelming scale of a major metropolis.

Barcelona, Spain

Florence/Pisa (La Spezia), Italy

La Spezia, Italy
La Spezia serves as a practical and efficient gateway to some of the most celebrated destinations in Italy. While the city itself is a pleasant naval and commercial port, its primary value for most visitors is its strategic location, offering direct access to the wonders of the Ligurian coast and the treasures of Tuscany.
La Spezia, Italy

The premier excursion is, without question, the Cinque Terre. This string of five ancient seaside villages, clinging to cliffs along the Italian Riviera, is a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. The most effective way to visit is by a short train ride from La Spezia Centrale station, which connects all five villages. You can hop on and off, perhaps hiking a portion of the scenic coastal trail (check for trail closures beforehand) or simply enjoying the unique character of each town, from the vibrant harbor of Vernazza to the iconic vistas of Manarola. A ferry from La Spezia’s port also offers a beautiful perspective from the sea, though it is slower and weather-dependent.
View of Ponzano Superiore's colorful houses framed by olive trees. This hilltop village is a highlight for cruise passengers hiking the scenic trails around the La Spezia port, offering a peaceful escape into the Ligurian countryside.

For those with an ambition for Renaissance art and architecture, both Pisa and Florence are viable, albeit long, day trips. A visit to Pisa is focused on its magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli (“Square of Miracles”), where the Leaning Tower, the Duomo, and the Baptistery form a stunning architectural ensemble. Florence, further afield, demands a full and fast-paced day. It offers an immersion into the heart of the Renaissance, with the chance to see Michelangelo’s David, Brunelleschi's Duomo, and the Ponte Vecchio. Given the travel time, a structured tour is often the most pragmatic way to experience these Tuscan cities from the port.

Should you prefer a more relaxed day, or if you’ve previously visited the main attractions, La Spezia itself offers an authentic slice of modern Italian life. Stroll the palm-lined waterfront promenade, explore the pedestrianized shopping streets of Via del Prione, and experience the bustling daily food market in Piazza Cavour. It’s an excellent opportunity to enjoy regional specialties like focaccia and fresh pesto without the crowds of the more famous nearby destinations.
Aerial view of the medieval hilltop village Castelnuovo Magra, a scenic shore excursion near the La Spezia cruise port. Features the historic castle tower and panoramic views of the Ligurian valley and Mediterranean landscape.

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Rome, Italy
Disembarking at Civitavecchia marks the end of your sea voyage, but treating it as the immediate end of your vacation is a missed opportunity. While the port itself is primarily an industrial gateway—functional rather than scenic—it serves as the threshold to one of the world's most profound cultural experiences. Attempting to see Rome as a single-day shore excursion often results in a frantic, crowded blur. By extending your stay post-cruise for two or three nights, you allow the Eternal City to reveal itself at a human pace, transforming a checklist of monuments into a genuine immersion in history, art, and Roman life.
Rome, Italy

From Port to City Center - The transition from the ship to Rome requires a bit of planning. Civitavecchia is approximately 50 miles northwest of the city. For those prioritizing comfort and ease—especially with cruise luggage—a private car transfer is the superior choice, offering door-to-door service to your hotel in about 75 to 90 minutes. Alternatively, the 'Civitavecchia Express' train is a reliable option for independent travelers, connecting the port station to Rome’s San Pietro and Termini stations. It is efficient, though it requires navigating the transfer from the pier to the station with your bags.

A Suggested Post-Cruise Itinerary - Day 1: The Ancient Core
After settling into your hotel, dedicate your first day to the origins of the empire. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill form a massive archaeological park. We cannot overstate the importance of pre-booking timed-entry tickets weeks in advance; the standby lines are grueling and a poor use of your limited time. Walk the Via Sacra in the Forum where Caesars once celebrated triumphs, then ascend Palatine Hill for a view over the Circus Maximus.
Rome, Italy

As the sun sets, the city cools and the light softens. This is the ideal time to visit the Pantheon. Standing beneath its unreinforced concrete dome—the largest in the world for nearly two millennia—is a humbling architectural experience. End your evening with a walk to the Trevi Fountain, then seek out dinner in the Monti district. Look for *Carciofi alla giudia* (Jewish-style fried artichokes) and *Cacio e pepe* to taste the true flavors of the region.
Rome, Italy

Day 2: The Vatican and Trastevere
Cross the Tiber River to Vatican City. This is the smallest sovereign state in the world and home to an overwhelming concentration of artistic wealth. A guided tour is highly recommended here, not just to skip lines, but to provide context for the miles of galleries leading to the Sistine Chapel. St. Peter's Basilica requires a separate queue but is essential viewing; the sheer scale of the interior is difficult to comprehend until you are standing inside it.

In the afternoon, escape the heavy tourist traffic by heading south to Trastevere. This neighborhood, with its ivy-draped ochre buildings and cobblestone lanes, retains a village-like atmosphere. It is the perfect setting for the Italian ritual of *aperitivo*. Find a table in Piazza di Santa Maria, order a Spritz or a Negroni, and engage in people-watching before enjoying a leisurely dinner at a local trattoria.
Rome, Italy

Day 3: Baroque Elegance and Departure
If your schedule allows a third day, slow the pace. The Borghese Gallery, set within a sprawling park, offers a more intimate art experience than the Vatican. Reservations are mandatory and strictly limited, ensuring you can view Bernini’s sculptures and Caravaggio’s paintings without fighting crowds. Afterward, explore the high-end boutiques near the Spanish Steps or simply wander through Piazza Navona to admire Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers.

Airport Logistics
When it is finally time to return home, Rome offers straightforward connections to Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO). The Leonardo Express train from Termini Station is the most reliable public option, taking 32 minutes non-stop. Taxis operate on a fixed-fare system from within the Aurelian Walls to the airport, though traffic can be unpredictable. By staying these extra days, you ensure your final memories of Italy are not of a rushed bus ride to the airport, but of a sunset over the Tiber and the taste of genuine gelato.

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.
