Uriel Elchalal, MD, is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Vice Dean of Student Affairs for the Faculty of Medicine at Hadassah Hebrew University. He also serves as the Head of the High-Risk Pregnancy Outpatient Clinic at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center and the Head of the Maccabi Women's Outpatient Health Center in Jerusalem.

Dr. Elchalal earned his Doctor of Medicine from Ben-Gurion University in 1984. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Kaplan University Hospital in Rehovot, Israel, before becoming the Chief Physician of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hadassah University Hospital in 1993. In 2003, he completed a research fellowship in reproductive sciences at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

A dedicated researcher and educator, Dr. Elchalal has contributed over 100 articles to professional medical journals. He is also the author of three books published in Hebrew focusing on obstetrics, gynecology, and reproduction.

Dr. Jeannette Wolfe is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and the Joy McCann Endowed Professor at the UMass Chan School of Medicine - Baystate. She has spent her entire attending career working and teaching in one of the busiest emergency departments in the Northeast.

In addition to emergency medicine, her passion lies in understanding the ways in which biological sex and gender influence wellness and disease. Cutting-edge research definitively shows that men and women often have different responses to the same illnesses, traumas, toxins, and therapies.

Dr. Wolfe's personal mission is to increase awareness of this information and use it to improve the medical care of both men and women. She is a national lecturer and writer, and she hosts the podcast Sex and Why, which explores how biological sex and gender influence our brains, bodies, and behavior.

Ports of Call

Athens (Piraeus), Greece

Piraeus is a sprawling, bustling port city that serves as your gateway to Athens. Let’s be clear: unless you have visited Athens multiple times, you should immediately leave the port area and head into the ancient city center. The journey takes 30 to 45 minutes. While taxis are plentiful at the terminal, the Athens Metro (accessible via a short walk or shuttle to Piraeus Station) is cheap, efficient, and bypasses the city's notorious traffic. Take the Green Line directly to Monastiraki or the Blue Line to Syntagma Square.

For first-time visitors, the Acropolis is non-negotiable, but it requires a strategy. During the Mediterranean summer, the marble steps are blindingly bright, brutally hot, and packed with crowds by 10:00 AM. Pre-book your timed-entry tickets well in advance, and make this your very first stop. After descending, head straight to the Acropolis Museum. It is a world-class, climate-controlled masterpiece built over an active archaeological excavation, offering context that the bare ruins on the hill cannot provide.

From there, the historic neighborhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki fan out below the Acropolis. Yes, they are heavily trafficked by tourists, but wandering the pedestrian lanes, browsing the Monastiraki Flea Market, and seeing the Ancient Agora (where Socrates actually walked) remains a spectacular way to spend an afternoon.

When it’s time for lunch, skip the restaurants with aggressive touts holding laminated menus on the main squares. Walk a few streets deeper into the Koukaki neighborhood (just south of the museum) or the upper edges of Plaka for authentic souvlaki, fresh Greek salads, and cold Assyrtiko wine.

If you have already conquered central Athens on a previous cruise, consider heading south along the Athens Riviera. A taxi can take you to Lake Vouliagmeni for a swim in its mineral-rich, thermal waters, or further down the coast to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, which offers some of the most dramatic coastal views in Greece.

Santorini, Greece

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey

While Kusadasi serves as a pleasant, modern resort town, its primary significance for the traveler is its role as the gateway to Ephesus. This is not merely a collection of ruins; it is one of the best-preserved ancient metropolises in the Mediterranean, rivaling Pompeii in its ability to transport visitors back to the height of the Roman Empire. The site is vast, anchored by the iconic Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, which once seated 25,000 spectators. Walking the marble Curetes Street allows you to trace the actual grooves left by ancient chariots.

For a truly immersive experience, we strongly advise securing tickets to the Terrace Houses. Located within the archaeological site but often requiring a separate entrance fee, these covered excavations reveal the domestic lives of the Ephesian elite. The preserved frescoes and intricate mosaics here offer an intimate counterpoint to the monumental public buildings outside and are well worth the extra cost.

From a practical standpoint, Ephesus demands preparation. The site offers very little shade, and the white marble reflects the intense summer heat. High-quality walking shoes are essential due to uneven, slippery surfaces. Beyond the ancient city, the House of the Virgin Mary offers a quiet, spiritual experience in the hills above, while the Basilica of St. John in nearby Selçuk provides further historical context.

Upon returning to the port, Kusadasi itself offers a functional, if commercial, conclusion to the day. The Grand Bazaar is famous for leather goods and Turkish rugs, though the sales tactics can be aggressive. For a more relaxed end to your visit, bypass the high-pressure shops for a seat along the waterfront promenade to enjoy a strong Turkish coffee and baklava while overlooking the Aegean.

Chania (Souda), Crete, Greece

Salerno, Italy (Amalfi Coast)

The colorful coastal town of Atrani, Italy, seen from its beach on the Amalfi Coast. The historic architecture, featuring arched stone viaducts and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, is set against a mountain backdrop under a clear blue sky.

Salerno is less a primary destination and more the most strategic gateway to the sublime beauty of the Amalfi Coast and the historical treasures of Campania. Its value lies in the world-class options it unlocks for a day in port.

The most popular choice is, of course, the Amalfi Coast. We strongly recommend taking a ferry directly from the port area. It’s the most scenic and practical way to bypass the notoriously congested coastal roads, offering breathtaking views as you approach the iconic towns. The first stop is often Positano, a near-vertical cascade of pastel houses and chic boutiques tumbling down to a pebbled beach. Further on, the historic maritime republic of Amalfi presents its magnificent Arab-Norman cathedral and a charming central piazza.

For an equally profound but often less crowded experience, consider heading south to the archaeological park of Paestum. Here, three of the world's most astonishingly well-preserved ancient Greek temples stand in a tranquil field. Walking among these Doric masterpieces, which predate the Parthenon, is a powerful and unforgettable journey into Magna Graecia.

Should you prefer a more relaxed day, Salerno itself is a genuinely pleasant city. Its medieval old town (Centro Storico) is a delightful labyrinth of narrow lanes, and the impressive Duomo di Salerno houses the crypt of Saint Matthew. A leisurely stroll along the Lungomare Trieste, a grand tree-lined seaside promenade, offers a perfect, authentic slice of southern Italian life.

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Civitavecchia serves a singular purpose: it is the industrial gateway to Rome. The Eternal City lies roughly 75 to 90 minutes away by road or rail, making your time ashore a logistical challenge that rewards strategy over spontaneity. We cannot overstate the importance of this commute; treat the journey as a tactical necessity to access one of the most culturally dense cities on earth.

With a typical port day, attempting to see 'everything' guarantees nothing but exhaustion. We strongly recommend curating your day around one of three distinct tracks to ensure a quality experience.

First, the Imperial Track. Focus on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Walking the Via Sacra offers a tangible connection to the origins of Western law and governance. However, admission lines here can consume hours; pre-purchased, timed-entry tickets are not optional—they are essential.

Second, the Vatican Track. St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums hold an overwhelming concentration of artistic wealth. Standing beneath Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling is profound, but the crowds are equally intense. Strict dress codes (shoulders and knees covered) are enforced, and guided access is the only way to navigate the vast collections efficiently within a limited window.

Third, the Centro Storico. For those who prefer atmosphere over checklists, a walking tour of the historic center offers a more relaxed pace. Start at the Pantheon—the world’s best-preserved ancient building—then wander to Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain. This approach allows time for a proper Roman lunch. Avoid restaurants directly facing major monuments; walk two streets back to find authentic cacio e pepe or carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style artichokes). A rushed sandwich does a disservice to Italian culinary heritage, whereas a seated meal offers a necessary respite from the sensory overload.

Regardless of your choice, Rome demands respect for the clock. Always build a significant buffer for your return trip to Civitavecchia to ensure a stress-free conclusion to a spectacular day.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
Your parent or child requires hospitalization
You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION
