7-Day Western Mediterranean: Corsica Cruise itinerary map

Ports of Call

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Rome, Italy
Your Mediterranean voyage commences from Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, but the true overture to your adventure begins in the heart of the Eternal City itself. As dedicated professionals, you spend your days in structured, high-stakes environments. Rome offers the perfect antidote: a city where millennia of history, art, and culture converge in a vibrant, unscripted symphony of life. We strongly encourage you to arrive one or two days prior to embarkation, allowing you to decompress, acclimate to the time zone, and immerse yourself in a world far removed from your daily practice before your onboard conferences begin.
Rome, Italy

Arriving and Settling In - Upon landing at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you have several efficient options to reach the city center. The Leonardo Express train provides a direct, 32-minute journey to Termini Station, the city's main transport hub. Alternatively, licensed white city taxis offer a fixed fare to destinations within the Aurelian Walls. Securing a hotel in a central, walkable neighborhood like the area around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, or the charmingly bohemian Trastevere will place the city’s treasures at your doorstep.

A Suggested 48-Hour Roman Prelude - Day 1: Imperial Grandeur and the Art of Living
Rome, Italy

Begin your first day by stepping back two thousand years. Pre-booked tickets are essential to bypass the long queues at the Colosseum, the iconic amphitheater that once hosted gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. From there, walk over to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the sprawling nerve center of the ancient empire. Standing amidst these evocative ruins, you can almost hear the echoes of senators debating and chariots rattling on stone roads. It’s a powerful, humbling experience that puts the passage of time into perspective.
Rome, Italy

For lunch, escape the crowds and wander into the nearby Monti district, a fashionable neighborhood of artisans and ivy-clad buildings, to find a traditional trattoria for a plate of *cacio e pepe*. In the afternoon, embrace the Italian concept of *la dolce vita* (the sweet life). Cross the Tiber River into Trastevere, a picturesque labyrinth of cobblestone streets and ochre-colored buildings. Spend hours simply wandering, discovering hidden courtyards, boutique shops, and lively piazzas. As evening descends, find an outdoor table for an *aperitivo*—a pre-dinner drink with snacks—and watch the world go by. This is Rome at its most authentic and relaxing.

Day 2: Divine Art and Baroque Splendor - Dedicate your morning to the world’s smallest sovereign state, Vatican City. Again, pre-booking is non-negotiable. The Vatican Museums house one of the greatest art collections on earth, a journey through centuries of human creativity that culminates in the breathtaking Sistine Chapel. Seeing Michelangelo’s ceiling and *The Last Judgment* in person is a profound cultural moment. Afterward, step into the immense and awe-inspiring St. Peter's Basilica, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.
Rome, Italy

In the afternoon, enjoy a more leisurely exploration of Rome’s historic center. Visit the Pantheon, an architectural marvel with its staggering unsupported dome and oculus open to the heavens. From there, it’s a short stroll to Piazza Navona, a stunning showcase of Baroque art and architecture, dominated by Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers. No pre-cruise stay is complete without a visit to the Trevi Fountain. Toss a coin over your shoulder to ensure your return to Rome, and perhaps indulge in a scoop of artisanal gelato from a nearby shop. This is the perfect, relaxed conclusion to your city immersion.

The Journey to Your Ship - On embarkation day, you can travel from Rome to the port of Civitavecchia with ease. A direct train from Termini Station is an efficient and scenic option, or you can arrange for a pre-booked private transfer for ultimate convenience. By arriving early, you transform this travel day from a stressful rush into a calm, simple transition from your Roman holiday to your Mediterranean cruise. You’ll board your ship not with the fatigue of a transatlantic flight, but with the enrichment of a city that has captivated travelers for centuries.

Portofino, Italy

Portofino, Italy
Portofino is one of the Italian Riviera's most famous jewels, a near-perfect crescent of pastel-hued buildings curving around a harbor of fishing boats and superyachts. The experience begins on the tender boat, which offers a stunning approach to this famously picturesque village. Once ashore, the main activity is simply absorbing the atmosphere. The central Piazzetta is the heart of it all, an ideal spot for an espresso or aperitivo while watching the world go by.

For the best views, a short but steep uphill walk leads to Castello Brown, a 16th-century fortress offering panoramic vistas of the village and the Ligurian coast. Nearby, the Church of St. George provides another beautiful vantage point. While the village is known for its luxury boutiques, its true charm lies in its compact beauty. Be prepared for crowds, especially on days when ships are in port, and for premium prices at the waterfront cafes. Portofino is not a destination for a long checklist of sights; it's a place to stroll, savor a view, and experience a small, concentrated dose of *la dolce vita*.

Ajaccio, Corsica, France

Ajaccio, France

Marseille (Provence), France

Marseille, France
Marseille is not a polished museum piece; it is France’s oldest and second-largest city, a vibrant, working port with a palpable energy and a history stretching back 2,600 years. Its character is a compelling mix of grit and grandeur, offering a genuine slice of Mediterranean life. The natural starting point is the Vieux Port (Old Port), a bustling U-shaped harbor where fishing boats bob alongside yachts. Here, the daily fish market is a spectacle of local life, and the surrounding quays are lined with cafés perfect for observing the city in motion.

For the definitive view, make the journey up to the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. This Romano-Byzantine basilica, affectionately called "La Bonne Mère" (The Good Mother), offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of the city, the sea, and the surrounding islands. We recommend taking the tourist train or a taxi for the steep ascent to conserve time and energy. Back at sea level, lose yourself in Le Panier, the city's oldest quarter. Its maze of narrow, winding streets, ochre-colored buildings, and artisan workshops feels a world away from the grand 19th-century boulevards elsewhere.

Marseille also serves as the essential gateway to the broader Provence region. A popular day excursion leads to the elegant city of Aix-en-Provence, the refined counterpoint to Marseille's urban dynamism, known for its fountains, markets, and ties to the artist Cézanne. Alternatively, for a stunning natural escape, head to the charming fishing village of Cassis, the launching point for boat tours into the Calanques National Park—a series of dramatic limestone fjords with brilliant turquoise water. Whether you immerse yourself in the city's layered history or venture into the Provençal countryside, Marseille offers a rich and authentic experience.

At Sea - Cruising

Gibraltar

Gibraltar, Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a destination of immense character, a British Overseas Territory where red phone boxes stand under the Mediterranean sun. Its identity is dominated, quite literally, by the Rock of Gibraltar, a limestone monolith that offers one of the most memorable day-port experiences available.
Gibraltar, Gibraltar

The primary objective here is to ascend the Rock. The most efficient method is the cable car, which provides a swift, scenic journey to the top. From the summit, the views are genuinely breathtaking, a panoramic sweep across the Strait of Gibraltar to the mountains of Morocco in Africa, with the Atlantic on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. While at the top, explore the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. St. Michael's Cave, a natural grotto transformed into an auditorium with a stunning light show, is a must-see. For history enthusiasts, the Great Siege Tunnels offer a fascinating glimpse into the Rock's military past, a testament to ingenuity and endurance.

Of course, no visit is complete without an encounter with the famous Barbary macaques, the only wild monkey population in Europe. They are undeniably charming but also opportunistic; keep a firm grip on your belongings and avoid carrying food. Back at sea level, the town itself is easily explored on foot. Main Street offers a unique, VAT-free shopping experience, while Casemates Square is a lively hub of pubs and cafes perfect for enjoying a pint and reflecting on the singular geography and history of this remarkable port.

Why Protect your Trip?

Whether you’re planning your next trip or you recently booked one, travel insurance can help smooth over many unexpected travel glitches—while putting your mind at ease, knowing you’re off the hook for covered expenses that could arise from them.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can provide you benefits and professional support when a covered situation comes up before or during your trip. The following examples may qualify for benefits:

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen
  • Missing your cruise departure after a covered flight delay

You also can contact our travel protection partner Allianz Global Assistance’s 24/7, award-winning customer service for on-the-go assistance with issues like a medical emergency, replacing your lost passport, or making reservations around the world. To be eligible for a time-sensitive waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusions, purchase your travel insurance plan within 14 days of initial trip deposit (other purchase requirements and conditions apply). Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.

24-HOUR ASSISTANCE

Provides around-the-clock support during your trip. Allianz Global Assistance’s staff of multilingual problem solvers can help you with medical, legal, and travel-related emergencies whenever they happen. Medical assistance may include, but is not limited to:

  • Medical triage with referrals to local prescreened medical providers
  • Ongoing medical monitoring
  • Payment guarantee
  • Emergency medical transportation

Additional services for travel-related emergencies can help with:

  • Missed connecting flights
  • Lost/stolen travel documents
